Nanosolar. This product of extremely low cost panels promises to deliver energy at a cost that would compete even with coal. By focusing on lowering production costs rather than increasing efficiency, this company may have found the solution. Trying to force companies to be environmentally friendly at the expense of profit is nigh impossible. This would make "going green" the profitable and difficult not to justify. With decent energy storage or older school generators for night power, this could become the worlds primary source of electricity in general. No more coal, gas or nuclear powerplants. Furthermore, it might decrease the cost of electricity itself.
As a caveat, the company is private and doesn't release very many details, so they may just have vaporware. However, they actually shipped products to Germany in December so it looks real enough to give me hope.

This wouldn't solve our car problem, but would at least provide the raw energy needed to power electric cars. A new form of electricity storage with high recharge rates and good energy density would still be needed. Ultra capacitors might work, such as EEstor.
