So, while the Right drools over the faux accomplishments of the recently deceased former first lady, we may want to take an honest look at her true legacy. And, it's not pretty.

The first lady notoriously had enormous sway over her husband, and could have intervened if she wished. She infamously tried to champion another epidemic of the era, drugs, with the overly simplified and ultimately harmful "Just Say No" campaign. It failed due to ignoring the roots of the cause and not understanding that addiction is a disease, not a choice. [The Guardian] writes, "Much like abstinence-based sex education... 'Just Say No' spread fear and ignorance instead of information." Like HIV/AIDS, the White House failed to properly educate itself, and as a result, let down its most vulnerable citizens in another spectacular way.

"On a personal level, she was someone who was not against gay people," Richard Socarides, a former White House adviser for President Bill Clinton, told the Associated Press about Nancy Reagan. "But when the country needed leadership, President Reagan was not there, and his wife — who was able to do more — was not willing to step up. It reflects rather harshly on both of them."

We've managed to go from "Just say No" to "**** it. Just legalize it". I'm not so sure that's progress. And trying to tie Nancy Reagan to AIDS is utterly ridiculous.

AIDS understanding was still in it's infancy at the time.

She gets a pass.

I'd like to...but, the White House and the CDC should have been more aggressive in its response instead of going, "Eeow! Gays and disease. Yuck."

Neither Nancy or Ronnie gave anyone Aids...as far as we know. Stupid post, Baron.

yeah she should have aimed higher. like going to school cafeterias and badgering the crap out of kids about what to eat. THAT is a true calling.

"Just say no", like abstinence education, is supposed to solve a problem before it starts.

Not only that but the liberal reaction to aids/hiv was not to attack it where it needed to be attacke - in the gay community - buy by attempting to paint it as a mainstream disease. Political correctness does kill. Instead of handing out condoms in gay bars and bathhouses they created policies to "unstigmatize" the disease causing the death of thousands.

I didn't see a single PSA from the CDC promoting condoms during that time frame. None.

Ask the young, two-time baby mama Bristol Palin how that "abstinence education" worked out.

She encourages abstinence but has failed and has acknowledged failure. You shouldn't be looking to her or any other human being for a perfect example anyway, instead you should consider the message: Don't have sex and you won't get pregnant. Pretty simple.

Boo hoo. Do you think the gay community didn't know about aids? Did it need the government to tell them about it? Nope. Blaming the spread aids on the Reagans instead of promiscuous gay sex is like blaming diabetes on racism.

Better to blame donuts.

Staying silent on AIDS was clearly what great leaders do.

Of course she failed; it's predictable. That's because abstinence is doomed to fail when faced with raging teenaged hormones. You obviously refuse to deal with what is happening in the real world, preferring instead to live a Utopian idealism much like like a Sanders supporter.

Actually, people avoided pregnancies all the time by abstaining, you just have a low opinion of the potential of humanity.

I am confused about the reference. Why do you think Nancy Reagan would do this?

dumb post.

because childhood health doesn't matter and fat kids are normal, right?

And people who tried abstinence end up pregnant all the time, just ask Bristol.

At least she didn't start a White House tradition of using astrology to make major decisions.

Strange that Right Wing Evangelicals ignore that when they slobber all over themselves to promote the "great Reagan legacy."

Probably because the bible forbids astrology.

Teen Vogue? Are you ****ing kidding me?

According to*ABC, more than 20,000 Americans had died from the disease by the time he first spoke about it.

That's really not acceptable. No matter what side you are on.
