No. How presumptuous. I can't remember where I read this, but Cardinal Dolan has in the last week or so spoken of the conclave of 2013 which elected Francis and what the Franciscan who addressed the opening of the conclave (I think) said to the cardinals: "The Holy Spirit has already chosen the Pope. It's your job to discover who it is." I'd like to think that the Holy Spirit will also provide guidance to whoever is elected in the choosing of his name.

In the main they tend to name themselves after a predecessor that inspired them the most. It will seem like a search for a name would be a search for some predecessor.

Francis II? Naaaaaaa for me. I want a Romanian Catholic Traditionalist Pope. Pope Francis, in my opinion, was definitely a Saint. He scored high in the Saint Department, but not so high in the Catholic Ideologue Department.

Benedict XVII? After XVI? He scored high in the Traditionalist Department. But not high enough for me. He did not promote the Latin Mass. The Latin Mass should have same prestige like any other Mass, if not higher; afterall it is a node to the first Catholics. I also don't like that he resigned.

John Paul III? That will be a good one

Is this too irreverent?
When Pope John Paul 1 died after what, 20someodd days, the National Lampoon featured the headline, "God vetoes Vatican choice!"

It'd be cool to be Sixtus VI... although it probably wouldn't take people long to start coming up with satanic conspiracy theories.

That be too tempting for conspiracy mongers to resist. A Pope whose designation begins with a 6; followed by another 6. Two 6s out the three to complete the satanic 666? Too much to be a coincidence.

I didn't at first catch your riddle. Makes me also wonder how Nostradamus is doing so far. If I recall right we should have had the last Pope like say three Popes back

Yeah, I'm thinking that's probably why we haven't had a Sixtus since the 16th Century.

Come get your kicks with Sixtus the 6th....

A brilliant intellect yours is. :) We can barely scrape the surface of the papacy and there you are in the thick of it in the sixteenth century

I've always found it weird that in 2,000 years we've never had a Pope James even though there were 2 Apostles with that name.
The practice of choosing a new name didn’t really take hold until the 16th century. Prior to that, it was uncommon and only done either to disassociate from their pagan roots or pay homage to whoever appointed them Cardinal. There wasnt any symbolism behind it until the mid-20th century when Popes started choosing names that indicated their intentions.

Naw, my head is just filled with useless information.

If I ever write a book with a fictional Pope, though, that's what I'm going to name him...

Rump, when will you come to the Truth regarding the Fake Popes thru the centuries? the ones who massacred the Bible Believers and attempted to destroy God's church.

Martin Luther tried to warn us...........deaf ears people.

Jesus said the 'way is narrow that leads to eternal life, few there be that find it' .......the fake popes wanna make sure the sheeep can't find the Truth.

A diamond in the rough is still a diamond.

The matter of a fitting name having been settled naturally one has to be curious as to how construction of this monster develops. If a monster he is to be. Maybe a composite of various monstrous popes. A devotee of Pope Stephen VI at least? Conducting post mortem tribunals?

Fascinating character Pope Stephen VI. He exhumed and put on trial his predecessor Pope Formosus

Nope. An American Pope was the last thing on my radar. Or on anyone's radar for that matter
just as nobody thought of an Argentien, German, Polish Pope before

Its astounding the preponderance of Italian Popes! According to an article of the 266 Popes, 217 were Italian. From 1523 to 1978, 455 years, it was all Italians.

Since the first pope, St. Peter, was martyred in Rome, the Italian peninsula has been a privileged recruiting ground for the papacy.

Of history’s 266 popes, 217 were born in modern-day Italy, according to most counts. That means that four out of every five popes come from the land of pizza, pasta, and gelato.

All of the popes in the 455 years between the pontificates of the Netherlands’ Adrian VI and Poland’s John Paul II were Italian. Anyone living between 1523 and 1978 could reasonably have presumed that the papacy was an exclusively Italian vocation.

in my childhood it seemed that not only were all popes Italian, but called Pius as well .....
