Tomorrow is the Michigan presidential primary and we have open primaries here where a Michigan resident can vote for either party on that day. Now I am a Democrat - and fully expect to support the Democratic candidate to win in November and will do whatever I can to help. And that brings me to the problem.

I want to vote for Bernie Sanders as his positions on the issues are far closer to my own than those of Clinton. However, I believe more damage can be done if Trump continues to win more state primaries and destroys the Republican party in the process.

So should I vote for Sanders or go over to the dark side and play havoc with the Republicans and vote for Trump hoping he makes the GOP one giant garbage dump of ruin and reek?

Trump is going to win anyway so I would vote for who you really want to win. Bernie needs your help.

Fine example of whats wrong with open primarys they are rife with legal corruption. Just a thought how many trump supporters do you think are going to vote for bernie in michigan.

I did not vote for Reagan either time and he was a gun banner proud and loud.

I sincerely doubt your single vote will play any havoc. But you should do whatever feels right.

But I do wonder how many democrats are going to go to the other side to vote for Trump.
I also wonder how many Gov. Kasick supporters will vote for Trump ...hoping for a brokered convention in hopes the convention would choose Gov. Kasick.

Vote trump or cruz, both are crazy.

But is full blown whack job crazy enough? I want somebody who will split and destroy the GOP as a party. I am pretty sure Trump would do that as he is the perfect enema to purge the party of the infection of right libertarians and tea party know nothings. But it seems many in the party are willing to accept Cruz and just take the loss and move on.

A brokered convention is obviously the only chance Kasich has so that strategy would make sense. I still suspect what he is really angling for is a VP slot with Rubio. But that seems far more distant with each passing day and each Rubio disappointing state result.

Not sure what difference any of this will make since Michigan is going to go to the Dem candidate no matter which GOP candidate ends up getting the nomination.

I was tempted the same in the Virginia primary, went with Bernie in the end. If I may, I think Bernie needs your vote more than the garbage dump does.

I agree with you - at least my heart does. However, one out of every three votes in the Dem primary will be African American and that clinches it for Clinton meaning Sanders loses no matter what I do.

If Trump wins with the help of my vote and the GOP goes down in flames with him either on top or on the outside - that gives me some feeling of pride as being a part of that.

I honestly still have not yet made up my mind.

Well, I went over to the dark side and voted for Obama in a state primary in 2008. Of course, I came to my senses prior to the general election but I contributed to the current disaster.
Careful when playing around with this stuff-you have no control over how your vote impacts later events.

Thanks for all who provided their two cents on this.

Within the hour I will be voting and I have decided to vote for Bernie.

My gut prediction is that Clinton wins the state by at least 16 points and Trump wins by five or so.

If I voted in the NH Democratic primary I would have voted for Bernie. I don't like many of his ideas, but I don't ever remember a politician who is as sincere as he is, and yes, IMO that counts for something.

I still think Hillary will crush him because of the large black population in Michigan.

Exit polls are saying that 69 percent of primary voters in Michigan are white and 22 percent are black.

In the 2010 census the black population was a little less than 15 percent.

Just curious, Haymarket, why is it, do you think, that black support behind Hillary is so strong?

Well apparently we all got a big shock last night regarding that. Not only did Bernie win - but he cut into the black support for Clinton capturing some 35% of that vote. In other states he was only getting 15%. So maybe this is changing. Illinois and Ohio next week could well tell more of this sub story.

As to why? Possible explanation include
1- he association and service with the Obma administration
2- the desire to believe that Obama has been a great President and Sanders is more critical of some of his policies than Clinton is
3- the large number of households in the Black community headed by women who are then a natural constituency

thats just off the top of my head.
