Muhammed Had a 9 year-old wife? (yes, I said wife...not daughter)

For those unaware, a popular figure of the Qu'ran is a girl named Aisha, she was the daughter of Abu Bakr (who later became the first caliph).

Now think about this...when Aisha was 6 years old she was betrothed (ie: engaged) to the Prophet Muhammad and at 9 the marriage was consummated. Nevermind the fact that she was referred to as his "favorite wife", I wanted to know the Muslim perspective on this issue and what they thought of it?

I'm all for respecting your beliefs...but I can't and will never respect taking advantage of a child as young as 6...ever

Joseph got married to Mary when she was 12 and she has the virgin birth of Jesus at 14.

Back then it wasn't uncommon for girls to be given off for marriage around the age of puberty. History agrees with this. I mean, just 100 years ago the age of consent in America was 10 years old.

Even to this day you can see girls marrying just as young:

In Chile, a 12 year old can give consent for marriage or sexual intercourse.

However, Christian scholars speculate her age to be between 11-15 years old at the time of Jesus' birth. For evidence they cite apocryphal gospels though.

She was his Betrothed and ofc, she was the favourite
Oh and no Muslim scholar can agree with her age, some say 6. Some same 9, some say 13.

Cases of children being married young was very common historically and not only in Islam but in all countries. I see no true issue with this and i don't see why anyone else would but do enlighten me.
What do i think? I think it happened over 1,000 years ago and it is only cited now by people who wish to use it against Islam as if it condones pedophilia. Was it wrong then? No. Is it wrong now? Yes.

I agree with Laila. This argument is a silly attempt to link Islam to pedophilia. There is no connection between the two. With the life expectancy of the human race, then, approximately half of what it is today, marriages to those of a very young age were not uncommon. It was also not uncommon for women to be married based on agreements made by their fathers, which I believe is what happened in this case. So, how does this apply to modern day Islam? It doesn't. At all.

Just because it was more common to have young wives in the past and this doesent just go for muslims by any means.It doesent mean it was any less harrowing and painfull for the children involved.

Unfortunitly many people in muslim countries were taught muhhammed was a perfect person and they should follow his moral standards to the letter.Its reasuring that many strong believers still dont believe in this particular idea and this same thinking they should use more broadly.

Muhammad was 43 when he consumated his marriage to Aisha. Today in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Yeman, and Pakistan old men are following the pedophile prophets example some are marrying little girls as young as 6. IMO it is disgusting regardless of ones time in history or religious background. How can a normal middleaged man be attracted sexually to a child. Its sickening today and yesterday. Muhammad was an evil disgusting perverted pedophile.

Like someone else said, where is the attraction?

Im assuming with that statement you can find a Qu'ran verse that states Aisha's age when he consumated his marriage?

In certain countries, young marriage is still linked with death rate. Its all well and good for Americans or Europeans or even westerners in general to sit there and preach it is wrong that children are being married off young [especially since they have access to the best medicine] but if a death rate in countries are high amongst infants, then i am almost 100% certain that young marriages would occur.

There are pedophiles in every religion and in every walk of life, it is all well and good to say its horrible yet it still occurs in western countries no? And yes, it is disgusting to do that now but 1/2,000 years ago. The world was very different.

Prophet Mohammed was a religious leader, a soldier and a messenger of God.

A 9 year old is a little girl. Consummation of a marriage with a 9 year old girl involves a pedophile raping that little girl.

If Aeisha was 9 and sex with a 9 year old girl is rape and Mohammed had sex with a 9 year old girl, then Mohammed is a little girl raping pedophile.

It ain't rocket science.

He was also a pedophile, a thief, a murderer, and a liar. When the Prophet Muhammad married the child Aisha, this was not an act of honor toward her childhood. When Muhammad married Zaynab, the wife of his adopted son, after seeing her naked and desiring her, this was not an act of honor toward married women. When Muhammad married the Jewish woman Safiya, upon his return from a raid in which he killed her father, brother, and husband, this was not an act of honor toward her. The same goes for all his marriages. Mohammad was an evil SOB who took what he wanted without regard to those he dishonored.

I firmly believe that the Islamic faith was created to serve Muhammad, and to legitimize his desires and urges.
