Yeah, you have a right to be blatantly lied to in your media and politics! Yeah, go America, #1! :2party:
Libel is a generally non-enforced precept of the American Constitution. We love freedom of speech too much.
Which explains the constant lying American media, politicians and in general everyone are doing on a daily basis. The truth has become a premium in the US.. and a rarity
It will be interesting to see whether turnabout is fair play and those who have called Tony Blair a liar are all brought to justice.
This appears to be another fine example of selective outrage.
Right, PeteEU.
Everyone in the United States lies and everyone in Europe tells the truth.
It's always easier to have official opinions where the truth is never in doubt,
This is a good law
The people, we the electorate cannot recall a MP if they have been found to be lying.
That power is with the court and if there is sufficient evidence. They will be stripped of their seat and the people will have another say.
The constituents deserve a representative who didn't lie and play the race card to win and they will get their say. I have nothing but support for the Judges decision.
Actually Tony Blair is a liar
Is he? And that has been proven in a court of law?
That is not what he was saying now was it. Pete supported the idea of having the politician removed from office as he won based on documented lies and libel. Obvisously a lieing european politician
Not sure what post you're referring to but here's what PeteEU said in the post i was referring
"Which explains the constant lying American media, politicians and in general everyone are doing on a daily basis. The truth has become a premium in the US.. and a rarity"
No it has not been proven, but yes he is
So all i have here is your unfounded accusation then?
You know you can be banned from running for public office for three years for those kind of statements?
Unfounded?
All the claims he made about Iraq were false now werent they? Read the Downing Street Memo
You are making an unproven claim that the man is a liar. You should be hauled before the courts, and this case under discussion sets the precedent. You will have to prove to the courts that you are right, and you obviously haven't done that. Ergo, no political campaigns for you for three years
Do you get the point?
heThey would have to prove that I was liar about Blair being a Liar first now would they not

Ah. Up with the Ministry of Truth, eh?
Idiotic statement. No wonder US elections are such a mess since the people accept the way they are run... lies and counter lies. Just think, the US use to be the becaon of truth, fairness and democracy.. now it is another banana republic in many ways, where the truth is defined by those with most power/money.

The truth is defined by the audience. That's how it should stay.
You don't get to the truth by letting the government declare what it is.
And as for "used to bes," it was the Europeans who came up with that idea. Yeah, I guess we are backwards, being about the only place left which actually takes the principles of the Enlightenment seriously. Silly old ideas.
Er.. the government aint doing anything. The law in question has been on the books for a century and rarely used since the burden of proof is quite high. And the law does not dictate what the truth is, since the truth dictates that, and that has nothing to do with the government.
Point is the truth itself can hold up to scrutiny if the process is fair.
Hm sorry dont understand what you are trying to say here.
