Right-Wing Activists Are Targeting People for Allegedly Celebrating Charlie Kirk’s Death

~~
I found it extremely alarming that college students dont want to engage with controversial figures. Never mind free speech and so forth -what happened to the notion of college as a place for vigorous exchange of ideas? Are students afraid of violence? or just so brainwashed they only want to here what they want to hear?

“This year, students largely opposed allowing any controversial campus speaker, no matter that speaker’s politics,” said Greg Lukianoff, the chief executive and president of Fire in a statement published with the report. “Rather than hearing out and then responding to an ideological opponent, liberal and conservative college students are retreating from the encounter entirely.”

The report found a continued decline in support for free speech among students of all political affiliations, and reported that “conservative students are increasingly joining their liberal peers in supporting censorship” and “students of every political persuasion show a deep unwillingness to encounter controversial ideas”.

“The atmosphere isn’t just cautious – it’s hostile,” the report states. “Students continue to show low tolerance for controversial speakers, and troublingly, more believe it’s acceptable to shout down a speaker, block access to events or even resort to violence to silence campus speech than ever before.” It found that these positions had “held steady or worsened in the past year”.

The survey also found that support for disruptive tactics to silence speakers had also increased and reached record levels. One in three students surveyed expressed some level of acceptance, even if only “rarely”, for resorting to violence to stop a campus speech, according to the findings, up from one in five in 2022......

Where's the thread and post that you are tattling on?

I've posted numerous times Trump and MAGAs are where they are today because of the free speech in the 1A as it was written in the 18th century in the age of the printing press and reading by candlelight. Trump and MAGAs have exploited free speech to destroy free speech which is an integral factor in where they are today.

Indeed, fascists love free speech until they finally gain their absolute power and authority as tyrant rulers. Fascists will fight hard for free speech until they are in power when the first thing on "Day One" is to murder free speech. Until their Day One fascist are fierce for free speech.

Liberals are not authoritarians.

If they don't want their students to become well-rounded adults who got to see discourse of unpopular opinions, one wonders why colleges bother with gen ed.

Controversial does not mean 'nutcases' it means ideas that most of us are uncomfortable with. Literally all new ideas start out as controversial ideas like say Social Security, the 40 hour work week, the Civil Rights Act, The ERA, Same Sex Marriage,

Whatever. College kids concentrating on getting degrees don't need this shit. This isn't what they go to college for.

Weak cry babies who need emotional support pets on campus. How damned weak. We need to stop coddling the cry babies. You don't get tough from acting like a baby. It a university, it's designed to help you handle tough situations, or it should be. Our spoiled younger generation needs to grow a set.

Not wanting to listen to some right wing dipshit spout lies doesn't make you weak, it means you have good time management skills.

Right wingers claim to want to let the "marketplace of ideas" decide. It did. You lost.

Spectacular, you really try to find the silver lining hope this cycle of youth will figure this shit out on the spot. They are tired of anybody and anyone coming to propagandaize a certain position, while either believing the opposite behind closed doors or is their genuine million dollar gig or whatever who do diddly poop scoots to solve it. Honestly just a paid gig to do literally that soiling shit honestly at our expense oh no.

I remember Christian nationalists came on campus holding signs about abortion or words to beg us to come a second time for Jesus. I was pretty over the experience about coming for Jesus the first time and thought I could do better to engage these types a few times. Disappointedly, a lot of angry liberals just wanted to shout their valid opinions and the guy usually responded more to them than me.

I personally had a fun time validating my line of thinking with the Christian cultists to engage in discourse but in the end, it wasn't the right medium. Nor are stadium pep rallies. Nor is anything in your face.

College kids eat discourse for breakfast or fail and go home to explain that one. They just don't like being lied too by anyone at this point. Something rather documented happening in real time. Children dying, adults moving on to social warrior crusades. How bizarre.

You want to have discourse with the youth? Stop the propaganda. Easy money.

I don't know what to make of it, either. I've always believed that kids at universities benefit from being exposed to many different points of view. That learning to accept others' right to express their points of view is fundamental to maintaining our democracy. As a member of the ACLU, I subscribe to the policy that upholding the rights of everyone, including those of people we detest, is the best way to ensure our own rights are upheld. I hate to see universities deny unpopular speakers the right to appear, to talk, on campus. That cocoons students. And, in my opinion, it sends the wrong message to the kids and to the community.

You really don't think a future lawyer wouldn't benefit from a culture of debating points of view???

Law students experience plenty of different points of view - and "debating" them as well.

That said, keep in mind that in Post #20, I lamented what I consider to be some universities' acquiescing to students' desires not have unpopular speakers/points of view presented on campus.
