Inbreeding is the production of offspring from the mating of individuals who are closely related.

Inbreeding is taboo worldwide due to the high potential for sexual abuse, especially child abuse, and lasting trauma. Additionally, the chances of inheriting genetic disease significantly increase among children who are the result of inbreeding.

Researchers from the University of Queensland observed 450,000 genomes from people of European descent born between 1938 and 1967. Out of the group, 125 people met the inbreeding criteria, meaning the parents were either first-degree relatives (siblings) or second-degree relatives (aunts, uncles, etc.). In this group, researchers found common health issues such as decreased cognitive abilities and muscular function, reduced height and lung function, and a greater risk of contracting diseases in general.

While inbreeding is incredibly taboo in the United States, it is somewhat legal in some states. While not widely practiced, first cousin marriage is legal in 19 states, and some first-cousin marriages are legal in seven states. Sexual relations and cohabitation are only prohibited in nine states. Approximately 0.2% of all marriages in the United States are between second cousins or closer. That means that there are about 250,000 Americans that are in these relationships.
Inbreeding is more common in the following states:

Generally, inbreeding is more common in the southeast region of the U.S. and more rural states. Approximately 70% of inbred families live in desolate areas.

I'll tell you this much about Maryland.
Waldorf is now a major urban metro area but back in the 70's when I moved away, it was still very much a back country berg AND a Sundown Town to boot.
When "Deliverance" came out and we saw "Dueling Banjos" we ALL thought of Waldorf!!!

Makes sense. Can you blame them? I mean if no one else is around for hundreds of miles, what are you gonna do?

Sheep? Dogs?

No, I hate animal abusers. How about knotholes in fences, or Mary Palm and her five sisters? :)
Whether you hate them or not, they exist. I would love to find if there are stats on which States has the highest sales in blow up dolls.

According to who?

There was this smoking hot chick in my HS freshman biology class. Long straight jet black hair. Picture Cher. She was moody, didn’t talk much and none of us could get near her

Rumor is she was doing her brother 👎

I want to see if the OP’s family tree has any branches......

According to who?
Seriously? You didn't see the two links that lead to this research? Granted there are a lot of other link, not sure why. But still the two for the research are obvious.

Some minor corrections and dispelling of common misconceptions as well as further details

Inbreeding is the production of offspring from the mating of individuals who are closely related.

Inbreeding usually refers to such close relations breeding across generations, although technically first generation is inbreeding as well. A pairing is not considered inbreeding if there are no common ancestors for 5 generations of each individual. Additionally, many laws do not stop at either actual sex or blood relations. There are laws which prevent marriage on a legal level (even when sex is not a required part of the legal marriage), and also between those legally related, even if there is no abuse or risk of genetic disease (as addressed further in the post)

Inbreeding is taboo worldwide due to the high potential for sexual abuse, especially child abuse, and lasting trauma.

The taboo stems from a condition known as the Westermarck Effect and is not blood related at all. It develops between individuals growing up together. It has been known to develop between completely unrelated individuals. In India, this effect became a problem where a child bride of an arranged marriage was sent to live with the child groom's family until both were of such an age to have sex and be married. Many of the arranged couples did not want to have sex with each other. Most opponents against incest are religious based, with the abuse and trauma being only relatively recent arguments against the practice

Additionally, the chances of inheriting genetic disease significantly increase among children who are the result of inbreeding.

These chances are only of significance from repeated inbreeding over generations. First generation inbreeding actually has a low risk (albeit higher than a non related couple) and is a common method used by animal breeders to reinforce certain traits within their breeding lines.

Researchers from the University of Queensland observed 450,000 genomes from people of European descent born between 1938 and 1967. Degree relations are counted by the number of steps one has to take to determine relationship to another. So parent/child is also first degree. First cousins are 3rd degree. (parent ->aunt/uncle -> cousin) There is a lot of disagreement out there as to whether or not 3rd degree relations are dangerous. Technically, inbreeding includes both 3rd and 4th degree relations, unless, for humans, they are by marriage only.

How nice of the folks in Queensland to do their research in the US. first cousin marriages are legal in all of Australia: Australia and still allowed in Canada and most of Europe and South America: Less Reliable Source

No one is suggesting that inbreeding doesn't happen in Canada or Australia or Outer Mongolia for that matter. But this research concerned citizens of the U.S.

OK, fair enough, but still interesting to read WHICH States have the highest inbreeding.
BTW, every quote you attributed to me came from the article I provided a link to, so they were not MY words.

lol...that is a long list of states.

Hey now. Who out there has not found a cousin or two to be extremely hot, especially when we were forty and they were twenty-two?

TMI?

Wasn't trying to claim anything was yours per se. Merely expanding on the points since most people have those misconceptions, or are ignorant of the facts.

I also have to look at the study still (no time yet this morning) but it would.be also interesting to see how many of those cases were known relations prior to the inbreeding occuring.

Top 20, I am assuming. Still only 2/5 of the country.
Due to the relatively small gene pool brought over from Africa during slave days and the eventual banning of importing more, there is a lot of common ancestry in the US black community. I forgot the exact figure, but I recall reading something about 3-degrees of separation max for about 80% of the population.

That's one of the many reasons why I encourage interracial procreation.
