I don't doubt it. Teachers of any minority stripe face problems with staff (and parents), and the less exposure folks have to any given minority, the more likely they will face those problems.

The survey of 79 trans and gender-nonconforming teachers from the U.S. and Canada found that the harassment they face ranges widely: from 20 percent who reported verbal harassment, to 17 percent who said they'd been asked to change how the present themselves, such as their clothing, to two teachers who said they'd been fired.

"I was horribly harassed by a coworker and very little was done about it," said Lauren Heckathorne of Evanston, Ill., who identifies as nonbinary. "The focus was on making [the harasser] more comfortable."

These findings come from our online survey, and follow-up interviews by phone and in person with two dozen of the 79 teachers who responded.

Despite the challenges they face, a majority of these teachers also said they have tried to integrate LGBT-related topics into their teaching. Many also mentioned advising LGBT awareness groups for students, training peers or addressing the topic in venues such as school assemblies.

And, they told us, they see schools as crucial spaces not only of learning, but of safety, for the next generation.

"I don't think I've ever seen a supportive parent for my LGBT kids," says Chris Smith, who teaches many recent immigrants in a high school in New York City. Considering the high rates of bullying, homelessness and even suicide among LGBT youth, these teachers say their work can be a matter of life and death.
My only question is, why are we letting the mentally ill teach our kids anything?

By the way: the mentally ill, which is separate from transgenderism, can and do and must be allowed to teach your children if they are otherwise qualified.

As i have already stated in this thread, why should someone that denies basic biology, teach it? They also have a 50% suicide rate AFTER surgery.

You are implying with no scientific evidence that transgender people are mentally ill, and stating they should be denied the right to choose there own profession. Prove being a trans is a mental illness. Otherwise, present each person you have a problem with mental health evaluation, and point out which parts of it should bar them from their chosen profession. Do those things, and you won't be a bigot.

There is a Trans person on this board, one who I often disagree with. Very often. But that person is not mentally ill, in my opinion. She is quite happy with the change, and if my kid should encounter her wouldn't bother me one bit. It's not like it rubs off, or trans people are trying to convince others its just a fun thing to do. And if my kid one day comes to me and says, I don't feel like a girl, I'm uncomfortable in my own body. It wouldn't bother me for them to make changes that makes them happy.

And proclaiming they are denying basic biology is just ignorance. It's not social conditioning that makes them feel uncomfortable in their own bodies, its biology. Why should they suffer because their chromosomes didn't form right?

And what about personal freedoms huh, who are you to decide what other people should be doing. In my opinion, its no ones business but the theirs.

What you are afraid of with Trans teachers, is it may show a student with similar problems that there is a solution. Instead of forcing them to shamefully hide who they are to appease the sensibilities of their peers.

As far as your point on suicide. Show me where these people left notes saying they did it because of the operation, and not say oh, the multitude of bigots such as yourself that bully them for daring to be different. More often than not suicide comes about from feeling ostracized. Not regret over personal choices.
