Why it's not just religion inflaming tensions between Serbia and Montenegro
This is a very good article on why tension led to mass protests over the Serbian Orthodox Church installing their next leader for Montenegro. The Serbian church is by far the largest church in the country, but it's also a symbol in the very struggle of identity, the country is split between people identifying as Serbs and those identifying as Montenegrin (there's also a Albanian minority near the Albanian border). The question of whether the people of Montenegro are Serbs or Montenegrin has deep historical roots, and was already debated over 100 years ago. Furthermore I can add that the Orthodox Church has a deep symbolic meaning in Montenegro, it was under church leadership Montenegro was able to achieve autonomy during the Ottoman era. The church basically created Montenegro.
