Militants armed with rockets and heavy weapons launched a concerted assault on a major prison in northwestern Pakistan late Monday, triggering a fierce firefight with security forces in an apparent bid to free militant prisoners.

The attack on the prison in Dera Ismail Khan, close to the South Waziristan tribal agency, continued into the early hours of Tuesday. Preliminary reports indicated that some prisoners had broken free.

“Firing is continuing,” said a senior security official in the town, speaking by phone on the condition of anonymity because of the delicacy of the situation. “Yes, some prisoners have escaped. But we can’t know the exact figure until we secure the prison.”

Great. Now we can add Pakistan to the list of Libya and Iraq in the last two weeks.
