Michigan, Arizona Primaries 28 Feb 2012 Thread

A one the GOP will want? No.
 
One interesting aspect of the Michigan primary is that any registered voter can vote. This means the Republican primary may have potentially lots of Democrats messing with them. I intend to do my civic duty and vote for Santorum. Four years ago I voted for Romney.

Well, I would like to see some more polling which shows Santorum with that big of a lead. Granted, a win in Michigan would be huge for Santorum. Bigger I would think significantly than the 3 state win he bagged. Big because Romney is the big government guy who digs all the bailouts and crapola, and Michigan has got detroit and all. Santorum winning in Michigan I think truly would shake things like a 9.0 earthquake and a following tsunami. Santorum so far has basically dethrowned the previous not Romney and has taken the mantle, but not the lead. Michigan would be huge going into ST.
 
A millionaire Washington DC lobbyist such as Santorum is "the conservative anti-Washington" candidate.

Polling in Michigan tends to be volatile in something like this. Just a week or two ago Romney was double up on everyone. I still would be surprised if anyone but Romney won here. If he does lose here, the wheels could begin to come off and its a whole new ballgame. I still would not bet against Mitt and the Wall Street machine behind him.
 
Obama - Harvard. Romney - Harvard. So only one could win in November.

Other than when they were facing each other, has any Harvard man ever lost a presidential primary or election?

15 days to the primary. As any one who has been paying attention could tell you, anything can happen in 15 days.

Romney might want to start diverting some of that Wall Street money over to the Gingrich campaign.

The Detroit paper this morning said that Romney will be spending that money an attacking Santorum just like he destroyed Gingrich in Florida. I suspect that is the strategy from here on out. Destroy each foe as they raise their heads above the fray until nobody else is left and then the nomination is yours through attrition.

I will leave shortly for the state capitol and am interested in the water cooler talk from fellow democrats if they will vote for Santorum just to mess things up. I know I will do my civic duty and do so.

The problem with that is Romney and Gingrich both took huge hits in their favorability rating when they went negative at each other. Rommney trying to destroy Santorum could be the exact wrong tactic for him to take. It seems that primary voters have been turned off by the negativity.

I think Santorum has it in the bag. If there is one thing Santorum is good at, it's campaigning.

He will appear before the prestigious Detroit Economic Club for a lunch speech. That is his chance to reach the Detroit area Wall Street types. It is a great opportunity for him.

I suspect you are correct. Romney probably knows this but has made a calculation that his money and organization and backing by the party establishement will leave him the last man standing - even if he is bleeding from a few wounds. Then the party will unite against the greater enemy and all will be forgiven.

Its far more likely they just close their check books. Most Wall Streeters understand you don't throw good money after bad.

My position is clear. I will vote for which ever candidate does the most damage to the GOP's chances of winning in November. Four years ago, I believed that was Romney. Today, Santorum is the choice. While I may indeed flip-flop the the flavor of the moment, my criteria remains the same.

Can't speak to that, but they were apparently fans of Mitt's father when they elected him governor.
