Merry Christmas - or Happy Holidays?

The ruckus around whether to say “Merry Christmas” or “Happy holidays” usually starts at the end of Thanksgiving, as retailers take down the turkeys with pilgrim hats and hang wreaths instead. Most of the time, it’s confined to the letters section of the local newspaper.

But Christmas came early this year. President-elect Donald Trump made his position clear in June, and many times since: “Boy, do I mean it—we’re going to be saying ‘Merry Christmas,’ ” he told a group of evangelical leaders in New York. (He made a similar promise last year, when he also suggested boycotting Starbucks after the coffee chain abandoned its traditional holiday cup design.)

What do you say?

Whatever, someone is wishing you well. If you take offence at how they say it then you have a problem

I have *never* run into a single human being that got upset over being wished a “Merry Christmas.” The War on Christmas stuff may the dumbest “culture war” issue I’ve ever come across in my life.

This.

If someone wishes me a merry christmas, I not only don't take any offense, I respond the same way. The only complaining I've ever heard on this topic is from christians who want every store greeting to say "merry christmas" and anything else is an offense to them.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Or it’s a case of someone simply saying “happy holidays”, and they think that person is VIRTUE SIGNALING (which...YOU. ARE. A. CHRISTIAN. you’re *supposed* to signal virtue, asshole), so yknow, that has to be called out.

What about those super-mega-extremely Christian fundamentalists who think that Christmas is a pagan and satanic thing and anybody celebratring Christmas will be sent to hell forever by that everloving Jesus?

Will they not be shocked if one wishes those super-Christians "a Merry Christmas"?

Looks like the politically correct Happy Holidays was just a fad.

Store clerks, and a lot of people are back to greeting with Merry Christmas. Even a Muslim store clerk that I always chat with.
I haven't encountered anyone saying Happy Holidays.

I've always used Merry Christmas.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

Merry Christmas for what should be the obvious reason.
Happy Holidays because some have time off for a week or so.

Now 8 out of 14 say "Merry Christmas".

I really cannot understand that anybody can possibly be offended by such a wish.

If some-one wishes me Happy Hanukka or Happy Ramadan or Happy Diwali - I would be pleased - and never be offended.

I don't take offence, but I don't wish anyone anything, and if they wish me marry Christmas, I would take the opportunity to inform them that Muslims don't celebrate Christmas. Most people know that though.

I would think explaining might come off as condescending, all in the way you say it I suppose. You could just reply with happy holidays or just a thank you.
All the atheists I know celebrate Christmas. They celebrate it as a secular as opposed to religious holiday so I see no reason why those of other faiths cant celebrate it as they do memorial, veterans, and independence days.

At the job, I say, Happy Holidays to not offend anyone, it's more generic and all-inclusive. In public, I say, Merry Christmas, though I really don't care about the distinctions or how it's received.

I'm not totally following this. Am I the asshole in that scenario, or someone who thinks the other person must be a christian and respond in kind is the asshole? I'm confused which is not to be confused with me perhaps being an asshole.

They know that. All Christians know that.
And your words are very arrogant.

If a Muslim ever wished me "Happy Ramadan!" - or words to that effect - I would reply: "Thank you - and same to you!"

How about "Merry Happy Christmas Holidays"?
