Mental health by political affiliation

There's nothing to figure out. You have access to a dictionary- use it.
I usually recommend Merriam-Websters to Americans.
You can read the definition of liberal all-day long, it's not going to help you. The only progressive liberal characteristic that exists today is their method for mislabeling, and redefining everything.

"You can put lipstick on a pig, it's still a pig.".

Nope, not surprised. This has been studied for a long time. Neuroticism is highly correlated with left wing politics. So is an external locus of control - less self-efficacy and confidence and low self esteem.
Neurotics believe they have a mental illness. Psychotics believe it's everyone but themselves.

Looks like it's from this:
Basically self-reporting of mental health and politics. I suspect it's less actual mental illness and more a case of liberals who have problems whining about their "mental health" and conservatives who have problems identifying the cause and fixing said problems (or at least not whining about it as much).
Subjective political self-identification combined with subjective mental health self-analysis. In other words, meaningless.

How many functional alcoholics think they don't have mental health problems? Many, I would guess. How many who have successfully navigated depression throughout their lives realize they have a mental health issue? On the other hand, how many exaggerate what may be signs into a lifechanging event?

Asking people to evaluate their own mental health can measure how people feel at a point in time. A clinical study that defined liberal and conservative would have merit. While most people are probably in touch with their own mental health, many will answer emotionally which makes such a poll uselessly biased. And limiting the choices to "excellent" and "poor" further opinionizes the answers.

Brilliant.
"He said as he tried to redefine 'liberal'."
Do you know how to use a dictionary?
You don't even have to know the alphabetical order if you just type into a search box.
"You can put lipstick on a pig, it's still a pig.".
Pointing at a camel and saying, "Look what horses have become!" doesn't mean horses have grown humps and camel toes, just means you don't know the difference between a horse and a camel.

Well of course MAGAs are happy. The idea of brown children getting all tangled up in razor wire and drowning in the Rio is cause to crack a bottle of champagne case of piss-ass Natty Ice Lite 'beer' and have a real celebration. Of course they love all the insanely stupid and evil things Trump is doing.

Not surprised at all.

MAGA conservatives are programmed to think they’re happy. That’s a feature of cult members.
Also, MAGA conservatives have been programmed to think that they're conservatives. And that Trump is a conservative.

That would certainly explain why you haven't looked up the research! 😂

Certainly have

It proves many things

Conservatives are typically the least educated in the US, the least well informed, have the lowest exposure to different cultures and religions.

As such conservatives can certainly be seen as being ignorant on many issues.

As ignorance is bliss and conservatives are the most blissful in the US, as shown by the OP, we can infer conservatives tend to be dumb and happy about it

Neurotics believe they have a mental illness. Psychotics believe it's everyone but themselves.
But only one has a strong correlation with politics. Left wing neuroticism.

Nothing surprising

In my life experience - individuals that are more liberal leaning are also more likely to appreciate and understand mental health, more likely to seek mental healthcare, more likely to be introspective, etc. And more likely to be honest about any mental health challenges they face.
🤷‍♀️

You sound defensive! 😂

I guess when you don't like the science, you make up your own.

I certainly agree with the study that conservatives are the most happy in the US,

After all ignorance is bliss and bliss is happiness

That's not what the study says, and your "argument" is just a trope.

Self rating, not completely scientific.

It’s not saying conservatives aren’t batshit crazy, don’t have mental health issues, they’re just less likely to admit to it. Kind of like not being able to admit being in a cult.

This one gives much better context and perspective.

Conservatives may self-rate as having better “mental health” because of stigma around the term

When conservatives rated “mood” instead of “mental health”, ideological gaps in ratings disappeared

To better understand the size and cause of this happiness gap, the authors of the study used a representative survey of 60,000 American adults from the 2022 Cooperative Election Study survey.

They asked subjects about their mental health, their political ideology, and their demographics—including age, home ownership, marital status, and more.

In the 2023 Cooperative Election Study survey, the scientists surveyed 1,000 American adults, Half were asked the same 2022 questions, while the other half were asked to rate their “mood” as opposed to their mental health.

In the 2022 survey, conservatives rated themselves on average 19 points higher for mental health than liberals.

Once positive mental health traits like age, marital status, and church attendance were accounted for, the gap reduced by 40 percent, to 11 points.

In the 2023 survey, when respondents were asked to rate their “overall mood” instead of their “mental health,” the remaining differences disappeared. The 64 percent of highly positive ratings of “mental health” for conservatives dropped to 49 percent for “overall mood”.

In contrast, while 29 percent of liberals rated their “mental health” as fair or poor, only 17 percent rated their “overall mood” the same way.

The authors suggest that stigma for conservatives around the phrase “mental health” might contribute to the gap, while the negative mental health ratings by liberals might reflect increased awareness of mental health issues.

The happiness gap, the authors note, may be dependent on which term is used to measure it.

The authors add: “There has been a lot of discussion about the notion that Conservatives are happier and have better mental well-being than Liberals, but we wanted to really test how true this is.

What our experiment shows is that it really depends what you ask about.

Yes, Conservatives report that their mental health is better than Liberals do, but that gap disappears entirely when we ask instead about each group's overall mood.

The ideological gap in mental well-being is clearly not as straightforward or consistent as it is often made out to be.”

The poll came out back in 2023, and when you change the terminology used from “mental health” to “mood”…the results shift.

The poll reflects more than anything how conservatives have a stigma around “mental health”

There’s nothing new there - it’s something that even this thread reflects

I was just referencing that study -

The only thing this “poll” from the OP reflects is that conservatives view mental health with a stigma.

And - as I replied earlier - there’s nothing at all surprising about that.

Ignorance really is bliss

Do we really want to trust Fox' data?
It isn’t even Fox’s data.

It’s self reporting of poll respondents.

It just demonstrates how a segment of our population is reticent to even admit they might have some mental health issues.

And 🤷‍♀️ here in reality - most people do at some point in time or another.

Pretending otherwise is akin to pretending one never has any health issues. It is just - frankly - either denial or ignorance.

Perhaps. But the responses (data) are dependent upon the phrasing and presentation of the polling questions.
