media is lying to us or they're relaying lies - Charlie Kirk weapon used IS A LIE (prove me wrong)

now, what is being sold by media is that its a WW1 era Mauser likely untraceable without serial numbers and we have no idea how he acquired it/used it other than it was his Grandfathers. COULD someone have taken an old Mauser actioned rifle and replaced it with a synthetic stock etc? Its possible - its very much NOT probable

I think the serial number business was some journalist rattling on about something of which he had only a dim awareness and others picked it up and ran with it because of their own ignorance. The same with .308 vs .30-06. They get confused on caliber vs cartridge quite often.
 
I still do not see enough to question the reported rifle, we are going to end up in conspiracy theory territory.

It wasn't a dreaded "assault weapon", but there was still some sort of narrative needed satisfied by whoever was writing the original, poorly informed copy.

"It's a German rifle! Possibly no serial numbers! A ghost rifle! A German ghost rifle! A NAZI ghost rifle perhaps! There are millions of them!"

All that aside for a moment, and assuming no plea deal, we are going to see a whole lot of evidence offered at trial and it will have to include the murder weapon, ballistics reports, etc. All the basics of forensics evidence used at trials like this showing the nature of the crime and the weapon used.

And I am not seeing enough to suggest some backtrack of what weapon was used.

Yup. Everytown is already talking about the need to ban “deadly sniper rifles”. I am surprised that the fudds aren’t out in force yet.

ok and that's fine but then we have to recognize/admit that nothing the media says is true about anything - it can all be guesses/mistakes/ignorance

like who the shooter is, what the motives are etc even

I see no reason to doubt it was something could be characterized as a Mauser rifle. As you say though, we shall see.

Even the fudds aren't going to rail against bolt action rifles. They might be in a FAFO position considering their earlier toadying to extremist gun controllers.

Indeed, all that was in doubt on the early stages. That happens quite often. Journalists feel compelled to bloviate. Get the scoop! We see the same thing on this forum. Go back and read the threads in the immediate aftermath of the assassination.

Yup. First they came for the ARs. Then they came for the handguns. Then the bolt action rifles.
