Maximum Speed Of Wind Turbines 180 MPH!!

I worked with an inspector in the offshore oil production business who left to go to work inspecting and doing maintenance work on the motors and mechanics of the mechanisms. Talk about working high I once asked him how much money he is making and he just laughed.

After a Quick Look at 165 meter diameter turbine spinning at 20 rpm, would have a tip speed over 350 mph😬

Excellent 15-minute document on all the issues with wind turbines from mfg. to assy. to maintenance to problems. Must watch!

I think the job pays quite well at the moment. I have heard in excess of $100k starting, but you already need some base compatible skills. If they pay that high starting, experienced workers probably get around $200k. I suspect initially the wages will stay above average, abut as the new farms pop up less frequently and only maintenance workers are needed, the wages will stop increasing. New employees will be paid less. The real wages of these jobs will decrease to other similar maintenance jobs.

Essentially, those blades are flying, just like the blades on a heavy lift chopper, like a CH-47. Then there is the problem of birds because these platforms aren't too high up, like a chopper. The stress on those blades is super hardcore stuff. Then the support equipment and some nasty work. We just had a fella in Japan got killed by some sort of structural failure of a blade or support equipment. Saw that on the NHK site this morning or yesterday. And if you factor in Earth shakes, even small ones, it gets even more difficult. Tough business, for sure.

Balades Diameters progress-

Is there a max RPM the blades can be turned?

Yes, they're geared to a generator so if they spin too fast it can overspeed the generator and destroy it, so wind turbines are often equipped with brakes to slow them down in high winds. Saw a video of one where the brake had failed in high winds and the generator started on fire. A wind turbine on fire in the middle of a rainstorm is a strange sight.

Do they use brakes? I thought they used variable pitch blades so the wind can blow through them without turning when necessary.

I think that's a pretty common feature also
