CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — NASA’s new Mars lander has placed a quake monitor on the planet’s dusty red surface, just a few weeks after its arrival.

Mars InSight ’s robotic arm removed the seismometer from the spacecraft deck and set it on the ground Wednesday to monitor Mars quakes.

A significant achievement just getting this probe to land safely on Mars. This seismometer is just icing on the cake.

Don't expect it to phone home too often. It seems system-induced tectonics/geology ended on Mars long ago.

When did you get back from Mars?

Gravitational effects can cause seismic activity. All the planets influence each other by that means.

According to visual and partial rover studies of the tectonic boundaries on Mars, the most recent marsquake occurred ~1 million years ago.

Wasn't it 2014 NASA decided that tectonic activity on Mars very likely may have ended 1 million years ago ?
