By the weekend it's going to be 20C here. On October 18th!

The long-term forecast is that we're going to have a milder than normal winter.

“There’s certainly a hint that we’re going to have a winter, but I don’t think it will be as brutal or strong as it was traditionally back, say 20 or 30 years ago,” David Phillips of Environment and Climate Change Canada said in a video interview with CTVNews.ca from Barrie, Ont., on Tuesday.

He said he is basing his remarks on data, such as ocean temperatures and historic patterns.

That's great. A milder winter is certainly something I look forward to.

So I guess my sister and her family will have a mild winter then.

That will be helpful.

Despite popular opinion, Canada does in fact have four seasons: June, July, August, and winter.
Except that it's now October and we haven't even experienced fall yet.

Please Lord let it be true! My first winter home other than the Covid winter in years and years. I've planned lots of things to keep me busy but it's the bundling up I hate. We'll see how it goes.

From the thread title I thought this was about the Toronto Maple Leafs…

Welcome to our world. After wintering in the southern U.S. every winter since 2002, our first full winter back in Canada saw us organizing commercial driveway clearing, focusing on small things like building a 2X6 frame to contain bags of chicken grit between the rear wheels of my 4X4 p/u and those heated mats for our front walkway, steps and porch. Those things were a god send.
Our house was built during the R2000 gen. so is well insulated as per code for electric heating we subsequently changed over to NG in the early 90’s. We also have NG fireplaces in both the living room and rec-room. We learned very quickly from our youthful neighbours how they utilize the personal shopping features offered by the local Zehrs, Freshco, Walmart etc., and realized we had to actually motivate ourselves to get into the winter wear and go for walks lest we seize up altogether.

Yeah I miss the weekly 3 rounds of golf but, as a retired machinist, having a heated shop out back with a couple of machine tools, I now spend those hours out there with the coffee machine keeping me supplied with good old fashioned Maxwell-House while I make parts or do repairs to those younger neighbours snowblowers, lawnmowers, or their kids dirt bikes and snowmobiles.

In short: travelling south for 5-6 months in the winter is now in the rear view supplanted by the planned overseas to the Algarve, a Viking river cruise etc..

Just another chapter being written by circumstances beyond our imagination causing us to enjoy alternative pleasurable experiences.

Seems to be pretty normal here on the BC coast. Temperature-wise, anyway. A little drier than usual, I think.
We heat with wood and we started burning a week or so ago. Yesterday we had our first frosty morning.
I don't miss the rain but others elsewhere on the island have had issues with shallow, dug wells drying up. Storm season coming up, though.

Years ago I saw a guy with a good idea- he had cut an inner tube into two, filled the halves with sand and closed the ends with twisted wires. They laid nicely on top of each wheel in the truck box, and he had sand on hand if needed.
Do inner tubes even exist anymore?

Yep. The Peavy’s mart that replaced Tractor Supply carry’s a variety of tubes for farm use. I was given a tip by an elder that chicken grit can get wet but not retain water as it’s coarse make-up allows for drainage so it never freezes enough you can’t easily scoop it out and also provides better traction aid.

A couple of thoughts on this weather phenomenon:

1. Proves climate change is real. Sure, why not. If snow in Texas is proof that climate change is a hoax, why can't I argue a mild winter proves it is real?
2. I want SNOW, and lots of SNOW. Temps need to be cold enough to keep SNOWFLAKES from melting. My skis are ready to go.
3.

Now THAT is cold, really cold!! 🤣

I'd rather be bloody cold than bloody hot.

I can put on a nice fleece in cold weather but I can't take off all my clothes in summer as nobody needs to see that.

Noticed your flag but you sound Canadian, you know, those tough durable types who can handle a bit of cold instead of the whiny types who skid off the road anytime there is a bit of frost ;)

Luckily for everyone I can't drive anyway but yes, I prefer the cold.
UK summers are bloody horrible as it's humid as hell and our buildings are designed to trap heat so they're ok for winter.

AC is not really a thing here.
