CNN — Using marijuana doubles the risk of dying from heart disease, according to a new analysis of pooled medical data involving 200 million people mostly between the ages of 19 and 59.

“What was particularly striking was that the concerned patients hospitalized for these disorders were young (and thus, not likely to have their clinical features due to tobacco smoking) and with no history of cardiovascular disorder or cardiovascular risk factors,” said senior author Émilie Jouanjus, an associate professor of pharmacology at the University of Toulouse, France, in an email.

How the hell do you control for anything. As it is, people don't tell their doc everything.

At any rate, I mostly do edibles and some vaping, and keep myself in great shape --- for someone 25 years younger

They looked at 200 million people and we don't have anywhere near 200 million pot smokers. So the people who don't smoke pot is the control group.

Those studies did not ask people how they used cannabis — such as via smoking, vaping, dabbing, edibles, tinctures or topicals. (Dabbing involves vaporizing concentrated cannabis and inhaling the vapor.) However, “based on epidemiological data, it is likely that cannabis was smoked in the vast majority of cases,” Jouanjus said.

Not really earth shaking news.
Excessive use can cause heart problems.
So can excessive use of alcohol, smoking, over eating, even excessive exercise.

While most Americans consider marijuana safe, new research published this week found that use of the drug is associated with a higher risk of stroke and heart attack, including among younger adults.

The analysis, which examined data from 24 studies and was published in the journal Heart, also found that marijuana use was associated with a twofold increase in the risk of death from cardiovascular disease. While this data only shows a correlation and cannot prove that marijuana caused these effects, it is well-established that the drug can raise blood pressure and heart rate and alter the heart’s rhythm, said Dr. Ersilia DeFilippis, a cardiologist at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. And a number of other studies have also suggested a link between the drug and cardiovascular issues....

Who is most at risk?

Generally speaking, older adults and people with underlying conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol or pre-existing heart issues are at the greatest risk, experts said. That’s because their cardiovascular systems tend to be more fragile, and marijuana further stresses the heart. In 2023, about 7 percent of U.S. adults age 65 and older reported using marijuana in the past month.

But the average age of patients included in the new analysis was just 38, an indication that marijuana increases risks among younger people, too.

Dr. John Ryan, a cardiologist at University of Utah Hospital, said these findings concerned him. He has himself seen heart attacks in otherwise healthy people who use marijuana regularly and noted that many young people don’t know the signs of heart attacks or strokes, which can include chest pain and sudden weakness or numbness.

Research suggests that while cardiovascular issues aren’t common in people who use marijuana, they happen frequently enough to warrant concern. These risks are most likely similar to those of light smoking, said Stanton Glantz, the former director of the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education at the University of California, San Francisco....
 
Correlation is not causation. That said... is this really a surprise? If you smoke, your diet is probably bad and you probably don't get enough exercise.

I only did tinctures or a few edibles, and it gave me an irregular heartbeat. Which can lead to strokes.

And indica strains made me nauseous, period. Even threw up once. Sativa was ok. I was using it for neck pain and to help me sleep. I used the tinctures regularly for sleep for awhile. I said screw it and gave it up. Not worth the $$ or risk.

I also get the same from eucalyptus cough drops. Dont use those anymore either.

Don’t care.

I very much enjoy my quality of life using marijuana. Quality over quantity.

Marijuana works better for my anxiety than any pharmaceutical drug ever did - and without the harsh side effects of any pharmaceutical.

So guess perhaps I’ll die sooner and stick with my marijuana and enjoy years without what can be crippling anxiety in the meantime.

That means it can only show correlation, not causality. Cannabis and heart problems might be linked, or they might not be.

Also remember that any study with any sort of political implications will suffer from publication bias. For example, if today you make a study showing global warming/cooling is anything but catastrophic, you will never get published. Same thing with drugs. Studies which find no link between cannabis and heart problems are less likely to be published than those that do:

Twenty studies with a total of 183,410,651 patients were included.. The risk of adverse CV events including acute MI and stroke does not exhibit a significant increase with cannabis exposure.

Like the attacks on seed oils (claims they are bad for you but don't separate the fact that seed oils are primarily used in deep fat frying and highly processed foods), this study of over 200 million people in no way separates cannabis use from other risk factors.

CA sober over 20 years. I know that cannabis has lengthened my lifespan.
