Marijuana use dramatically increases risk of dying from heart attacks and stroke, large study finds

Pot seems to be about as safe as it gets when it comes to recreational substances. Plenty of shit that will kill you deader than disco is available at the local gas station. I'm also not a pot head. Haven't had any in twelve years. I just don't believe all of the reefer madness stuff that has been coming out since some states figured out that pot isn't heroin.

smoked a bowl of black hash in 1969..no problems so far..if I had diabetes or cardiovascular probs id do edibles. I dont like those effects

Not surprising, the study was based on marijuana use via "smoking and vaping" thus came with consequences similar to tabacco use via the same means. There was a "THC-edible users" element to the study but I would argue that is so poorly regulated that it stands to reason that also came with consequences that I doubt are consistent.

Regulation can help with this, the risk is going too far and sending it right back underground commerce speaking.

In the context of "pooled medical data" alcohol use has similar increase risks of issues as marijuana does, just in slightly different physical impact regards over time.

From an overall level, I consider the CNN article attention grabbing value only. The numbers from the study alone suggests the impacts of marijuana use is way down the list from the top concerns this nation faces healthcare wise. Obesity and diet, resulting in diabetes and heart disease, it still number one. Cancers is on the list as number 2, but that is not exclusive to marijuana and tabacco use.

The question always comes down to the same thing, what is the proposal to deal with the issue? Because again, we'll end up in a conversation about predictable responses.

It doesnt need to be excessive use.
My point is if you are ingesting (eating or inhaling), any foreign substance (smoke for example). There are going to be health concerns.
That is why I said the study is not really earth shaking news.

At any rate, I mostly do edibles and some vaping, and keep myself in great shape --- for someone 25 years younger
Hopefully not alot of vaping. Most pulmonologists preach that sucking anything into your lungs other than breathable air or nebulizer treatments if needed, is a very bad idea.

Wow, you started young! I first tried it at 17.
My best friend had college age sisters. I actually smoked pot before I started drinking. My life would have been better had I just been CA sober my entire life. I would tell any under 18 year old that wanted to use drugs to use cannabis instead of alcohol or tobacco. Abuse of tobacco will likely kill you, abuse of alcohol will ruin your life and eventually kill you (if it doesn't kill you in an accident, abuse of cannabis causes issues, but is most likely of the three to be abandoned in adult life (in my experience).

I wonder how I even survived my Junior year in High As school.

My best friend at the time took me to a 3.2 bar for my 16th birthday. I like alcohol but it's something that I've always carefully monitored. My parents were both alcoholics, but neither one until my very late teens/early 20s - so it had no effect on my growing up. I just knew I was at high risk. I have 2 drinks a week, but I get high anywhere from 2-4 nights a week. If I had to give up either, I'm keeping weed.

And interestingly (at least to me) my fitbit told me last Sept. that I showed signs of AFIB while sleeping (not after weed use). So I made an appointment with the cardiologist. He put one of those monitors on me for 3 weeks. At first I was going to abstain from weed, but then I decided not to, because I wanted to know if there was a problem when getting high. It showed a couple of instances of SVTs that lasted for around 10 seconds, neither were around the times I got high (I was only getting high twice a week at the time). He said the SVTs were nothing to worry about - if they bothered me I should call him. Otherwise come back in a year. He made no mention of the fact that I use weed, even though I answered that honestly in the health questions.
