Marijuana officially legalized in North Korea (article)

That will give a whole new meaning to the starvation munchies. ;)

That's great....give starving people pot....JUST RUB IT IN UN!

Anyway...it shows that even the most closed society in the world understands that marijuana shouldn't be criminalized.

Or, how about it this way?

One of the poorest most unhappy country considered "modern", finding a way to tax some other item from their already poor populace in hopes to increase their government spending. I don't see this as "North Korea's Great Contribution to the Battle for Legalized Weed" but rather North Korea's vein attempt to raise more money for their government. Perhaps, at least, they'll use this money for something BESIDES their military. Doubtful though.

all that freely available pot
and nothing to satisfy the munchies
NK is even more hellish than i had imagined

  1. NK is a dictatorship, people getting stoned makes them complacent and unlikely to rebel
  2. MJ is a weed that grows anywhere and NK is too damned poor to waste resources on stopping it (they've got enemies of the state to deal with)
  3. Pot being illegal was pushed onto the world by the US, disagreeing is a nice way to spite us, surprising they're just now doing it

Weed is legal in the world's worst dictatorship, what does that say about the "Land of the Free"?

North Korea And Marijuana - Business Insider

If you look at the source article, apparently it's based on reports from "travelers" and references the fact that it grows wildly. I'm a little iffy on this, being I can't imagine vice overlooking this in their reporting on the region (which has been extensive and tends not to shy away from these issues)

and then there are comments like this "It is reported to be especially popular amongst young soldiers in the North Korean military – rather than getting hooked on tar & nicotine like their contemporaries in the West, they fraternize without fear of repercussion by lighting up king-sized doobies during down time on the military beat." adding a clear political edge to the reporting

Not to mention, weed grows everywhere in Bhutan, but the only people you will find that smoke it are the "urban" kids from Thimphu who were educated in places like Delhi

So I really question the source, it's validity, and agenda

Struggle Is The Enemy, Weed Is The Remedy: The Truth About Marijuana in North Korea | NK News – North Korea News

This is the type of citation it offers on establishing it's legality

<<<A source confirmed to NK NEWS that they had found a half lit joint on the ground in a rural area of the country with the Rodong Sinmunused as the rolling paper. The same source noted that, although it is easy to get hold of, the weed in North Korea isn’t actually that strong. Another reason for Californian hippies to stay at home, then.>>>
