When watching this clip, your first thought will probably be “What type of massive monster is trying to dig itself out from underneath the giant trees?” Obviously, it is not an earthquake as the trees in the background do not have the same shaking motion. It is also not a landslide as landslides do not move horizontally up and down.

This fantastic and quite scary clip was captured in a forest in Sacre-Coeur, Quebec, Canada. On the one hand, we are so inundated with movies about creepy creatures popping up from everywhere possible, that we are quite aware that our imaginations might be running rife. On the other hand, we have also taken note of recent discoveries of living creatures we thought went extinct millions of years ago.

So, what to make of this hair-raising event happening right before your eyes. Luckily for us, we have people in-the-know to come up with logical explanations, like Mark van der Wouw, an arborist (that is a “tree surgeon”), working with Shady Lane Expert Tree Care in Ontario, Canada. Mark supplied an entirely logical explanation for this phenomenon to ‘The Weather Network’.

It is clear that the footage was shot during quite a big storm. The water has saturated the ground, and the strong gusting wind was pushing the trees over, as their roots were not kept down by the hard soil any longer. Luckily the wind blows in bursts, unlike the wind you will find in a tornado, allowing the trees to settle back in the original position before the next gust hits them. A hair-raising clip, but with the unearthed truth setting one’s mind at rest.

…if you’re a child?

I didn't write the article...

I didn’t suggest you did. Which is good, because it sounds like the author is a moron easily amazed.

You don't think the video is creepy looking...got it...I do...

Not everyone resides in earthquake country...

Is that a prerequisite to understanding science? That’s a super elitist hot take.

No, it is a prerequisite to your not comprehending that not everyone has witnessed such a thing before...which is no surprise...

I don’t think my lack of comprehension is the sticking point here. You just lost your shit over water seepage.

Yeah, it looks pretty creepy, but my first thought it 'there has to be a rational explanation for this', and there was the presenter giving me that rational explanation.
Pretty cool vid though.

If I was walking in the woods and seen the ground and trees moving like that, I'd be moving at a very fast rate of speed back the way I came. I'm not sure I buy the wind as the cause, but it'll do until something better comes along. I'd just add that there are a lot of things that happen in this old world that one can't pin a cause to, somethings are meant to be unknown.

If Strange Evidence was still on the Science Channel, I'd certainly send them that clip.

Fun dynamic.
Of course, the first thing you notice is that none of the trees in the image have a large diameter, and they're all of the same type. It's a very rocky mountain slope, with little or no topsoil above the rock. As such, the roots can only go down a short ways before they hit rock and spread out to some distance, allowing the tree to continue growing. They quickly intertwine with the root systems of their neighboring trees, and probably travel well beyond the nearest ones. And when the force of the wind is enough to sway the trees, the attached root system heaves the shallow ground around them. Their strongly connected roots are the only thing that keeps them from toppling in high winds. Pretty cool.

Imagine hiking through there unknowingly, coming upon a small level clearing, rolling out your sleeping bag and bedding down, not knowing what will happen later at night when the winds pick up? It might start with you dreaming you're on a roller coaster before you wake up and your mind says, "HOLY SHIT - WTF !!!"

Maybe after 20 minutes or so, your memory searches its files and recalls what is was like 40+ years ago when you and your lover had a water bed, suddenly the sensation of rolling waves becomes relaxing, and you fall asleep again. You wake up refreshed and massaged.

It might make a fun sit-com episode.
