Man sentenced to 40 hours work punishment and 1/2 year provisional driving ban

The driver was driving on the fastest lane of the freeway when a warning light came on and a loud warning sound was given by his car, the warning was for a deflating tire. He kept driving at high speed until 21 kilometers further (13 miles) his tire gave way and he was forced to stop on the most left lane of the freeway. Another driver did not see it in time and crashed into the car, the driver of that car was seriously injured.

The driver of the car that stopped on the left lane after ignoring the warning light and sound was prosecuted in front of a criminal court and found guilty.

Personally I think it is a great decision of the judge. In fact I would say that the punishment the prosecutor asked for (120 hours of working punishment) and 2 years provisional driving ban, would have been a better punishment.
 
Sometimes lights malfunction and you have to ignore them and just keep driving...

But you cannot make that determination without checking whether or not the light is malfunctioning or your car is. It is stupid to ignore a warning light and sound for a deflating tire. If nothing else you move from the fast lane into the lane closest to the hard shoulder/emergency lane, you do not keep driving on the fast lane. And last time I had a deflating tire I felt the car no longer driving properly.

Because we were not talking about the check engine light here but the tire warning light. If I have a flashing emergency light I go to the emergency lane/hard shoulder and check my booklet about what the warning light is and call for help, I am insured for these kinds of things and a car will come and either check and fix or remove my car from the freeway and deliver it at the repair shop where I have my car fixed and then he drives me home (if the shop is closed).

You cannot just ignore some warning lights if you have no clue whether or not the light is malfunctioning, especially not if it almost kills another driver.

If you know your car well enough you can make that determination as you drive...

Can't tell until it happens... people can't be pulling over all the time just because a light goes off...

The guy ended up "pulling over" and getting convicted for doing so - stupid is as stupid does.

That is all nice and dandy if it is your check engine light or the power steering off light goes on, your tires deflating is not one of those things you can just ignore.

He did not pull over, he stopped on the fast lane where there is no hard shoulder or room to "pull over" that is why he was prosecuted and sentenced. He also did not stop for 13 miles, your just not describing what this person actually did, he did something terribly stupid and it was a crime because his failure to heed a potential car issue by not moving towards the freeway lane where he could have pulled over without endangering the lives of other people.
