That worked out great for the NFL in 1987. Might want to read up on sports history before saying something THAT stupid.
I was wrong about that; to be honest, I didn't think they'd have the balls to do it. I'm glad they did. And the "almost did it" is not as hollow as it sounds. From everything I've read and heard (admittedly some of it from inside people that you wouldn't believe me if I told you, and rightfully so), it was real as real gets.
That's a "you're gonna have to take my word for it" thing, and I don't blame you a bit if you don't. But I have it on good authority that they were ready and willing to walk off the court, at least the the Warriors-Clippers game, if something wasn't done. And apparently, it was the Warriors' idea.
Adam Silver was facing a full-on insurrection from players, coaches and sponsors. This was not Sterling's first offense; this was his last (and most public) strike. He got a pass for three decades (for which many people are responsible), and Silver (who has been commissioner for less then three months) had to act quickly and decisively. And I've met Adam Silver. Trust me, this was well thought-out ... nothing he does isn't. He's the most deliberate person in sports. This was a message, and it won't be the last one. There's a new sheriff in town in the NBA; Sterling was just the first outlaw to get the noose.
Oh god.
No one here is defending what he said. That's all an illusion in your head. What I am doing is making a case that he was set up so he would sell the team.
A man said some stupid things that negatively affected a commercial association (NBA) that he had voluntarily joined. The leader of that association (NBA commissioner) punished him (as severely as possible) for that infraction and the other members (NBA board of governoors) will likely vote to force him out. That does not happen everywhere or every day - which is exactly why this is news.
Lighten up. Nobody I've seen is supporting this guy at all. BTW, what ever happened to the Chicksy Dicks, anyway?
Do you think if the mistress of some black player comes out and says that (insert player name here) told her he wants her to stop associating with her church going friends that Silver will fine said player and ban him for life?
I can get you some killer deals on sterling silver if you're interested.
A bunch of Redskins scabs beating Danny White, Tony Dorsett, etc.? Yeah - such a huge mistake that they made a movie about it.
I'm just wondering what you think people should do, do you want the world to collectively pretend that none of this ever happened? Does that really seem realistic?
A very weak case, as many CONs are trying to dismiss the rant as 'old news' because they now are quite willing to say Sterling was a well known racist and bigot... (I just have to shake my head over that one). He made a lot of money outside the NBA allowing him to buy the Clippers, CONs say such men are very smart.... Sterling should be smart enough to know NEVER say anything but face to face- apparently he has had several court cases that only had another person's word he said something racist and he beat the rap.
CONs love to say you can't CON an honest man- LE baits 'terrorists' with phony bombs, they use fake hookers to trap 'innocent' men...
so I'll go along with an old saying we have in Oklahoma... it involves enough rope and a man foolish enough to keep pulling on it...eace

It made for some interesting and sometimes fun games.God that movie was awful. I hated The Replacements.
The use of scab players in '87 was a PR disaster at the time for the NFL.
Trouble is, he didn't say them publicly nor wanted them to be heard publicly.
A criminal act brought his *thoughts* to the public's attention. This is where I have a problem.
The guy's 81 and he sounded demented on that tape. I don't think he realized he was being scammed.
SAYS??? or is on tape making a string of racist comments.... as I recall Sterling is supposed to have a 'long history' of racist comments and CONs are climbing all over each other to use that as a reason this is all overhype.
From my position it appears the NBA has a new sheriff in town. That Sterling's fellow owners want him gone, and those CONs trying to now flip the script on capitalism are some of the worst sort of hypocrites. Both Libs and CONs use boycotts as a tool in social protest... the players were demanding action, the fans upset...
Now some may say capitalism is bad from C to m but I doubt most of us do... just feel nothing should be without limits.eace

Make one realize why the owners pay so much for talent.
HAHA some of those scab games were fun to watch though!
Yes, says. That was Sterling's crime here. He said something. He didn't actually do anything to his players or staff. He said something about Magic Johnson. We all know what he's been saying his whole life. Until his girlfriend released a tape made in private where he tells her who to bring to his games and who to take selfies with, the NBA and all of his players turned their heads.
It does make for pretty good conspiracy theorizing. However from what I know of Magic Johnson, he is a pretty straight down the line stand up guy. The NBA previously never batted an eye at Sterling's well known racial problems anymore than the NCAA did, so to my mind the idea that Magic was behind this master plan to trap Sterling or catch him expressing what was already public knowledge, just does not come together. But who knows? In Seattle some of my family are positively giddy with the idea the Clippers could possibly make it up there. I told them not to hold their breath.Magic Johnson reportedly interested in buying the Los Angeles*Clippers | The Point Forward - SI.com
With Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling’s racist remarks coming to light over the weekend, the emphasis has now shifted to “what’s next” for the controversial owner and his distracted franchise.
One of the biggest discussions has centered around the future of the Clippers and whether the NBA and commissioner Adam Silver will force Sterling to sell that franchise. In that vein, Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports is reporting Lakers legend Magic Johnson and his ownership group are interested in buying the team if Sterling is forced (or chooses) to sell:
Magic Johnson and his billionaire backers, the Guggenheim Partners, want a chance to purchase the Los Angeles Clippers, league sources told Yahoo Sports. “Magic’s absolutely interested,” one source closely connected to Johnson’s business interests told Yahoo Sports on Sunday night
Hmmm, GF last seen taking pictures with Magic Johnson....
Can you tell us who these many cons you see that are not quite willing to say Sterling was a well known racist bigot? From what I can see all the well known ones, the usual suspects, are not doing that. In fact from what I can see, there is near universal agreement that the man is a racist. I mentioned in my comments above that I have family in Seattle, and they are all hoping the Clippers get sold and brought their way. I heard just the same sentiment expressed yesterday on the Michael Medved (sp) show, who lives in Seattle. If even the radio "cons" are agreeing the man is racist, then who are these "many" cons you are seeing doing the opposite? Just curious.A very weak case, as many CONs are trying to dismiss the rant as 'old news' because they now are quite willing to say Sterling was a well known racist and bigot... That's true...I do need to lighten up. The constant barrage of crap on Bundy and Sterling is driving me crazy. It's pretty much controlled the media and DP for the last couple of days.
Sure, some of the games were fun, and then you have games like my beloved Buffalo Bills beating the New York Giants 6-3 in overtime in what is widely considered the worst NFL game ever played.
If that game took place today in the SEC (college football) between Alabama and LSU, it'd be hyped as the greatest defensive display in the history of mankind.
