SKOPJE, Macedonia (AP) Macedonia's parliament has adopted a bill imposing chemical castration on repeat offenders convicted of sexually abusing children but the country's leading child protection group said Wednesday that the law is still too lenient.

The Megjasi child protection group, which had campaigned for the procedure to be imposed on pedophiles, said the penalty should be mandatory even for first-time offenders.

Lawmakers voted Monday to make penalties harsher for convicted pedophiles, increasing the maximum sentence from 15 years to life imprisonment and imposing chemical castration on second-time offenders, with the procedure to be imposed on their release from prison. It introduces a minimum 15-year prison term for severe sexual offenses against minors, while other sexual-related crimes against children are punishable by between three and 10 years in prison.

The legislation also offers reduced prison sentences to first-time offenders agreeing to undergo the procedure voluntarily.
 
I can't say I am against this. If someone can't control these urges, society has an interest and right in controlling it for them.

But only in cases where the person is too far gone

In the time of the Romans, a rapist would have his balls crushed with a stone mallet. Yeah... good times.

I would think that castration is maybe a bit too rough... but maybe some way to make him impotent... I'm sure there are chemicals that create impotence or such.

I would like to know if this has any incidence on the recividism rate or if it is more a retalitory/symbolic gesture. You dont need a penis to sexually abuse a child.

Why not for rape?
 
If someone is so likely to rape someone that we have to castrate them, then we should just keep them in jail. Seriously.

Good. I'd frankly support doing the same to convicted rapists as well.
 
Why not simply kill them?

Chemical castration, aside from not addressing the non-sexual power/control aspect of sexual crimes (often argued as the principal motivation for such crimes), is "reversible", which is to say, when you stop taking the chemical that is repressing the libido ("castration") the libido returns.

I fail to see how this is anything more than a boat load of nonsense.

Personally, I'm a fan of capital punishment for sexual crimes. Where children are victimized the execution should be carried out with a rusty baseball bat.

Failing a nation having the balls to do the right thing (executing these scumbags) they should at least grow the balls necessary to physically, non-reversibly, castrate.

Of course, physical castration doesn't address the non-sexual motivations for sex crimes, but at least it makes a strong enough statement that it might discourage some sex offenders who aren't pathologically intent on committing such crimes.

Chemical castration is cheaper.
 
I would agree with chemical castration, but after a first offense and not in cases where it's something like an 18 yr old dating a 14 yr old. I dont know what Macedonia's laws are regarding pedophilia.

According to everything I've read, these people can not be rehabilitated or cured of this disorder, only manage their urges.
 
I think a rope, when fastened securely around the neck, and a drop of about 4 feet or so give or take a little depending upon weight, is a 100% guaranteed method of curing a sex offender and preventing him from striking a second time. hell I oughta run for office in Macedonia.
 
In America we have this thing called a constitution which is designed to control these vicious revenge instincts.

Anyone that support castrating others deserves to be castrated themselves. I don't care if it's chemical or physical removal, it is entirely unacceptable to act on another person in such a fashion no matter the situation. If you can't trust them than just don't release them from prison. Sick bastards.

Perhaps if you want to act like your more civilized than someone it might be a good idea to ACT like it.
