Our country is losing its common sense. People are no longer thinking with their brains but with their emotions
Why is common sense rare?

So, not only do we not learn from our mistakes, but collective memory also fails us. Hence the rarity of common sense, since prior experience – either personal or collective – is ignored in our relentless dash forwards, in our failure ever to look backwards, even when it helps make sense of what's in front of us

Here is an AI explanation of why this is happening

AI Overview

Many factors are cited in discussions about a potential decline in common sense in society today, including:
  • Information overload: The vast amount of information available through the internet can make it difficult to discern credible sources from misinformation, potentially leading to decisions that lack common sense.
  • Rapid technological advancement: The speed of technological change can leave some individuals feeling overwhelmed or unprepared to understand and apply common sense in new situations.
  • Reduced direct experience: Increased reliance on technology and virtual experiences can lead to less engagement with the tangible world, potentially hindering the development of practical common sense.
  • Fear of offending: A focus on political correctness can sometimes inhibit people from expressing straightforward, intuitive views for fear of being labeled insensitive.
  • Emphasis on specialization: Increased specialization in education, while beneficial for certain fields, might lead to a neglect of broader general knowledge and practical skills that contribute to common sense.
  • Desire for instant gratification: The desire for immediate results can impede the thoughtful reflection and patience required for sound decision-making based on common sense.
  • Social media echo chambers: Social media algorithms can reinforce existing beliefs and limit exposure to diverse viewpoints, potentially hindering the ability to consider alternative perspectives.
  • Decreased interpersonal communication: Reduced face-to-face interactions can impact the development of interpersonal skills, which are closely linked to common sense.
What does this mean for our future:

A decline in common sense can weaken a country's ability to function effectively by undermining decision-making, increasing societal divisions, eroding trust, and hindering problem-solving. As The Brunswick News puts it, "our growing inability to build consensus has impeded political decisions that are essential to progress".

These are the tangible consequences (according to AI) of what we face:

AI Overview

Challenges in Decision-Making and Problem-Solving:
  • Poor Decision-Making:
  • Difficulty in Adapting to Change:
  • Inability to Prioritize:
Increased Societal Divisiveness:
  • Fragmentation of Shared Values:
  • Impeded Consensus-Building:
  • Fanatical Policy and Undermined Compromise:
Erosion of Trust and Ethical Behavior:
  • Growing Suspicion of Truth:
  • Breakdown of the Social Fabric:
  • Loss of Interpersonal Communication:
Other Potential Consequences:
  • Vulnerability to Manipulation:
  • Social Disconnection:
  • Decline in Critical Thinking Skills:
I hate to say this because Trump has been pushing/supporting this lack of common sense that is happening, and saying that will automatically bring repercussions from Trump supporters that respond "in kind".

It don't matter if you're right or wrong because fewer decisions you make have any benefits for being right nor consequences for being wrong. Any important decision we have we are compelled and advised to bring in an so-called 'expert'. Without feedback of getting it right or getting it wrong we've become sloppy and apathetic.

I was right there with you until the meme.

“One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.”

-Carl Sagan

The fact that someone unironcially used AI to explain common sense tells us everything wrong with that poster...

THIS. THIS. THIS RIGHT HERE.

How often do we get to use the term irony according to its non-Alanis Morissette definition?

have been described by critics as being contrary to common sense, impacting areas like:
1. Trade and Tariffs:
  • Trade Wars: Imposing significant tariffs on goods from major trading partners like China, Canada, and Mexico has sparked costly trade disputes and retaliatory measures, negatively impacting American companies and consumers. Some economists argue this approach can be counterproductive to long-term economic goals.
  • Increased Costs: Tariffs have led to higher prices for everyday goods, including clothing, cars, and even food, impacting household finances.
  • Supply Chain Disruptions: The focus on tariffs has disrupted established supply chains, making it more challenging for businesses to operate efficiently.
2. Environmental and Climate Policies:
  • Withdrawal from the Paris Agreement: Pulling the United States out of the Paris Agreement, a key international accord for combating climate change, has been criticized for sidelining US climate leadership and potentially hindering global efforts to address the issue.
  • Rollbacks of Environmental Regulations: Weakening environmental regulations, including standards for air and water quality, has sparked concerns about increased pollution and negative health consequences.
  • Attacks on Clean Energy: Actions to halt the growth of clean energy sources like wind and electric vehicles have been criticized for potentially hindering progress towards a cleaner future and undermining investments in these growing industries.
3. Immigration and Border Security:
  • Harsh Asylum Policies: Implementing stricter asylum policies, including returning asylum seekers to dangerous conditions and separating families, has drawn widespread condemnation for its inhumane approach.
  • Increased Criminalization of Immigrants: Prioritizing criminal prosecutions for immigration-related offenses has been seen by critics as unnecessarily punitive and disruptive to families and communities.
  • Militarization of the Border: Diverting resources to militarize the border has been questioned for its effectiveness and potential misuse of taxpayer funds.
4. Domestic Policies and Executive Actions:
  • Attacks on DEI Initiatives: Actions to dismantle Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs have been criticized for potentially undermining efforts to create a more inclusive and equitable society.
  • Interference with Federal Agencies: Reports of the Trump administration's actions to interfere with the independence of federal agencies and replace qualified personnel with unqualified individuals have raised concerns about the proper functioning of government and the protection of workers.
  • Use of Executive Orders: Critics argue that the frequent use of executive orders, rather than relying on legislative processes, undermines democratic norms and leads to policies that are unclear or potentially illegal.
5. Rhetoric and Approach:
  • Undermining Expertise: Promoting "common sense" over evidence and expert research has been seen as a characteristic of Trump's populist approach and as potentially leading to flawed policy decisions.
  • Divisive and Confrontational Style: Trump's confrontational style and tendency to attack critics have been viewed as detrimental to reasoned debate and political discourse.
It's important to note that perspectives on these actions vary, and what one person considers "common sense" another may not. The information presented here reflects criticisms and concerns raised by various sources, offering a nuanced understanding of the complexities surrounding the Trump administration's policies.

Not to mention the infantile nature of the little tantrum.

I find it interesting when the left begins to lecture on common sense.

Common sense is just the wisdom gained through every day experience. Science is looking beyond every day experience to show some often surprising, counterintuitive observations and facts, and possibilities- including that The Earth is not unmoving at the center of the universe, or that space and time can be curved, or that men might indeed one day be able to even become pregnant.

Conservatism is just believing that whatever ideas and possibilities you grew up with is ultimate truth and the way God wants things, and everyone who says otherwise is a godless communist.

Men can't get pregnant. Women who identify as men can get pregnant but they're women they're not men.

"Common sense" is what people call things they believe, but can't actually prove. Most of the time, it's just bullshit.

The irony of starting a thread about "common sense" written by AI is very funny to me as well.

Men can't get pregnant.
Not quite yet. But as the article points out, it's not conceptually impossible. When it comes to science, never say never.

Common sense reflects everyday experience, while science pushes beyond it—revealing surprising, often counterintuitive truths, like Earth not being the center of the universe, space and time bending, or even the possibility of male pregnancy.

Conservatism is just believing that whatever ideas and possibilities you grew up with is ultimate truth and the way God wants things, and everyone who says or tries to push beyond that is a godless communist. That's why conservative societies and locales tend to be among the most backward, repressive, intolerant, and stagnant in the world.

Yes women can get pregnant.

I wasn't asking you. He was the one who appeared to believe females can't get pregnant or at least claiming they can through an emoji lacked "common sense."

I was answering you

Are you his mouthpiece?

No he was saying men can't get pregnant.

Trans men can get pregnant. It happens all the time. To say otherwise is denying reality.

You personally want to call them women in drag, or beards above and below, okay. Some people are obsessed with genitals. Kinda weird but no kink shame except when you want to look up a minor's dress then you cross a serious line with your fetish.

Are you his mouthpiece?
I wasn't answering for him I was answering for me.
Trans men can get pregnant.
But those are women.
It happens all the time.
Again women getting pregnant yes.
To say otherwise is denying reality.
I'm not the one pretending women are somehow men because they've kind of sort of look like men sometimes but not really.
You personally want to call them women in drag, or beards above and below, okay.
Because they are women the ability to get pregnant proves that.
Some people are obsessed with genitals.
Well we're talking about pregnancy which isn't genitals it's carrying offspring only the females can do that females are women
Kinda weird but no kink shame except when you want to look up a minor's dress then you cross a serious line with your fetish.
I don't do any of that. And I'll absolutely kink shame the **** out of somebody if part of their kink involves pretending to be a man and getting pregnant and publicizing it for everyone else to participate.

The second I saw that Rush Limbaugh was getting popular I knew we were ****ed.

I just didn't know how long it was going to take and I didn't know that Fox News was going to be part of it.

In order to hold dominance over the culture you have to be a culturally relevant.
