LOS ANGELES (AP) — A former Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy was sentenced to eight years in federal prison Monday for overseeing the backroom beating of a jail visitor who fellow guards testified was handcuffed on the ground and covered in blood.
What bad cops used to get away with, they are not getting away with any more, thanks to a year of relentless coverage on the issue of police abuse. This is also good news for law enforcement, who will, in the long run, end up with a cleaner reputation.
This yahoo is just one of 15 to be convicted. The others are still awaiting sentencing. One more is scheduled to go to trial in January. And this is just the beginning. Time to clean house.
