Los Angeles sheriff's deputy gets 8 years in jail beating

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A former Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy was sentenced to eight years in federal prison Monday for overseeing the backroom beating of a jail visitor who fellow guards testified was handcuffed on the ground and covered in blood.

What bad cops used to get away with, they are not getting away with any more, thanks to a year of relentless coverage on the issue of police abuse. This is also good news for law enforcement, who will, in the long run, end up with a cleaner reputation.

This yahoo is just one of 15 to be convicted. The others are still awaiting sentencing. One more is scheduled to go to trial in January. And this is just the beginning. Time to clean house.

I'm not familiar with the case(s) and there arent many details but if this was justice, I'm certainly glad it was served. It sounds justified from that piece.

The spread of cellphones with video capability has increasingly cast doubt on the bolded.

Further, for every cop that does do "crap like this," there are multiple cops who protect them - those are just as bad. Unless, of course, someone was capturing footage.

I agree. I know a lot of cops. Out of the twenty or so cops I know all but two of them are good people. One is lazy and one has a small pecker problem.

But it is a majority of cops that stand by and allow those few cops to abuse their power. The actual good cops who come forward to put a stop to the abuse are often ostracized and don't last long on the Force.
