Dick Durbin, on the floor of the U.S. Senate, equated U.S. servicemens' treatment of detainees at Guantanamo with the Nazi regime and the Soviet gulags. Coverage?... Zero
On that same day, Bill Bennet mentioned in an abortion discussion, that aborting black babies would reduce the crime rate-which is statistically a fact-and then immediately clarified that he though the notion was reprehensible.
The double standard kicked in.
First came CBS (drop the "C") News...With "Bennett Blunder" on screen, Wyatt Andrews teased his lead story: "He really did say it, that fewer black babies would reduce crime." Anchor Bob Schieffer appeared stupefied: "We start tonight with a story that everyone seems to be talking about, and you have to ask, 'Just what was the man thinking?'" Andrews played an audio clip of Bennett saying that "you could abort every black baby in this country and your crime rate would go down" as well as how "that would be an impossible, ridiculous and morally reprehensible thing to do." Andrews then seemed befuddled: "Abort black babies and the crime rate goes down?" Also, a rundown of ABC and NBC coverage of Bennett and how all ignored Howard Dean's "hotel staff" remark.
2. Then came the Washington Post Editor: "Bill Bennett Is the Poster Child for Racism"
"Bill Bennett is the poster child for racism" and "you cannot say that statement that was made by Bill Bennett is not a racist statement," Colby King, the Washington Post's Deputy Editorial Page Editor and columnist, declared on this weekend's Inside Washington. King contended that "there's no way you can parse his words and get away from what he said. What he said was morally reprehensible. He has said, in effect, that blacks have a predisposition for being criminals." No, Bennett simply based his proposition on how a higher percentage of blacks than other races commit crimes and, like King, Bennett rejected the idea of systematic abortion as "morally reprehensible." Nonetheless, King proposed, "Now the question is: How will his party handle him? Will they come to his defense? Or will they take the right position?"
Then, to remove any doubt that the media is a liberal mouthpiece, Juan Williams came on Fox to discuss it: "This speaks to a Deeply Racist Mindset"
Of the broadcast network Sunday interview shows, only Fox News Sunday took up Bill Bennett's remark (see items #2 and #3 above). "It really speaks to a deeply racist mindset," declared panelist Juan Williams, a former Washington Post reporter now with NPR. Williams contended: "I think it suggests a mindset and it's indicative among many black conservatives of why you can't get black people to trust the Republican Party as a home. So it really speaks to a larger mindset, Brit, about racism in America."
Democrats/The media (one in the same) think anyone who opposes the excuse-making and paranoid bigotry of the black community (Republicans)must be a racist, and so, anytime any Republican has an honest, open conversation about race, Democrats/The media (one in the same) pile on with baseless, reckless, adolescent screaming about racism. Being a party currently led by a former Klansman, Democrats should really try honestly examining who the problem is.
