Think about the role of the mentality involved in the war - of the mentality of 'empire', the mentality of colonies, the mentality of the value of human life versus national interests.
Think about how different is the mentality of Putin looking at the situation and caring about his feeling of the Russian empire, its history, his role as leader, the way he has such contempt for the idea of Ukranian nationality despite it being older than Moscow - how it's affected him that he was used toUkraine as a Soviet Satellite, blinding him to how it has become a nation surpassing Russia as a freedom loving, wonderful society much more productive.
Think as well about the mentality involved in his being a kleptocrat, where he also saw Ukraine as little more than a place to steal from, where from the fall of the Soviet Union until 2019 it was plundered by its rulers, leaving it the poorest country in Europe, as Putin was enriched by the oligarchs taking its money.
Think about the huge difference in Putin's being the embodiment of the cold war and Soviet mentalities, and the modern view of most people how that use of power is unacceptable. The mentality where he is blind to the horrors of the violence he's causing.
There's a lot to learn from these things but we can hope that one thing to come out of this is for the world's political culture to find a way to strengthen our support for freedom opposing his totalitarianism, instead of this attack weakening the world's support for freedom as Putin and China want. I'd say we don't yet know which will result. It partly depends how the war progresses and how Putin gains or loses from it.
