Legal means to kill

Jack Reacher said about the military something like... some join to serve their country... some join because their family does and some join as a legal means to kill a person. We seem to be seeing this last one more and more regarding the police with the video technology that is everywhere now. What are your thoughts?

The actions of a small fraction of police officers is not reflective of the vast majority who do their jobs as best they are able.

We ignore the vast majority who do their jobs, because we see the sensationalized actions of a few and project their faults onto the whole. :twocents:

Not nearly the best make-believe out there. I like John MacLean- none of these navel-gazing attempts to explore and rationalize and justify, just, "Yippee kiyay, motherf***er!"

It's probably easier to get away with random murder as a civilian than to get away with murder under the watchful eye of authority, if one just wants to kill.
 
Its true though. If you wanted to legally murder or maim people youd want to be a soldier, police officer, or doctor. You know how some people spit in other peoples food? Well... be nice to your doctor. Or he might just slice up your back tendons.

And be calm around cops. And what ever you do dont beg them because whatever survival training they learn teaches them that begging people are distraught and possibly lying.

Yes. I believe people who choose to make careers in law enforcement do so to benefit society at large. Relatively, few law officers use a gun outside a practice range during their careers. I don't find your paranoia justified.
 

Fine. Then they get assigned to the motor pool or something.

In the military you don't always get assigned to do where you want to do.

Everything you say about police is based upon your paranoia toward police. That isn't intended as an insult, it is an obvious observation.

What about the officer that is going to the gun range 3 times a week? Little overboard dontcha think?

Not trusting is not paranoia any more than trusting is delusional... and I am not calling you delusional.

A bit of advice... subjective posts with sophomoric reasoning is not a good look.

No, I go to the range three times a week and I am retired. Part of the problem with police officers is that they don't practice enough, because many become complacent and don't expect to slap leather. When I worked, I was at the range 5 mornings each week. The idea is that the more proficient you are as a shooter, the less likely you are to miss the target and shoot someone else you had no intention to shoot. During my career I drew down once on a suspect. He had already killed my partner and put one round in my leg. I took him with 2 .44 rounds, one in his neck, the second in his head from 18' away. That was my back up weapon, a Charter Bulldog. It had the firepower my .38 couldn't muster.

I've always carried revolvers until recently. Semi automatic hand guns make shooters lazy when it comes to proficiency. A wall of lead is the substitute. That's why we hear about officers firing a fusillade of rounds. An officer should be capable of taking a target with one or two rounds. Unfortunately, criminals started an arms race by using semi-automatic and unlawful automatic weapons. When weapons like Mac 10's and Tec-9's started showing up in the hands of drug dealers and street hoods, the .38 was no longer viable.

You have just learned why second guessing a police officer is easily a mistake.

BTW, even with a dead partner and a round in leg, I went through a vigorous departmental review process.

No. You are unable to objectively review your own words. Your fears are far greater than issues of trust. And your insults in the guise of advice, more desperate.

This is a database that tracks police shootings. There are approx 1.6 million law enforcement personnel. A handful of cops ever draw their weapon, let alone have the requirement to pull the trigger. The raw data proves that the vast majority of incidents involve cops and armed citizens resisting arrest.

Not every cop is perfect. Cops are society...and since there are some real ****heads in society it stands to reason that some will find their way onto the force. But the ridiculously vast majority? Come on...

I'mma have to say no. I would say some join so they can have power over other people and enjoy being abusive but even then I'd make them a great minority.

Joining up just to kill? No more common than any other psychopath roaming the streets...they exist but are rare, period.
 
I don’t think any join the police in order to kill. I think a lot join for the power trip and those kind of people are less likely to think twice before pulling the trigger. But if they just wanted to kill legally then wouldn’t they just join the military?
 

ok what about acute statistics? Like how many cops do 5 shootings in a carreer? how many do 10? how many do 20? the guy that got to 20 is probably executing people.
