Oh come on. In the article it says this was available for kids as young as 9th grade. I had to look it up because I was homeschooled until college, but 9th grade is supposedly 14-15 year olds.

5.4 percent of 13-year-olds, 11 percent of 14-year-olds, 20 percent of 15-year-olds and 33 percent of 16-year-olds report having had sex.

So 20% of kids who are 15 have already had sex. A book that educates kids about sex being available to 14-15 year olds seems like exactly the right time.

Depends on the content. Showing sex organs in the context of biology or sex Ed is fine.

Showing graphic pictures of vd is fine. It was the method my school used to scare a bunch of 8th graders straight.

School library books that are too pornographic to be read to adults at a board meeting?

Yet it's a mystery to some why patents don't just "trust the professionals."

Here it comes. Right-wing censorship in the classroom.

First it was historical racism, now it's going to be sex ed.

Abstinence-only, baby, abstinence-only! 🤦‍♂️

Someone is proud of the American Taliban

The book in question is not an educational text. It is a fictional graphic novel with pornography.

Are you going to do better against these Taliban than Biden did against the actual Taliban?

Kids are doing the stuff that's depicted in this book at that age. I looked at the book the first time all the fuss was drummed up about. It talks about consent and safe sex multiple times and also covers some LGTB specific issues.

Watch the video. They cut him off when it gets to the strap-on for their favorite dildo.

I don't know why they cut him off when it's so educational?

That doesn’t make it an educational text. Depicting underage minors engaging in sex acts as part of a graphic fictional story is pornography. Child pornography. And it doesn’t belong in schools or anywhere else for that matter.

Pretty sure the characters in the actual book were adults.

This is not unusual for a school board meeting. I've been to dozens and if the School Board doesn't like the topic that a guest is presenting they shut it down. They have dictatorial control in the meeting and that is why parents get upset. Inaction, and not acting preemptively to keep this type of material out of the schools is concerning. Every school should have a parent/teacher committee to review materials purchased for the use of students. I say that with some reservation since some places have removed Dr. Seuss books from shelves. Radical opinions on either side have to be tempered with restraint and reason. Teachers are charged with teaching curriculum but parents need to have a hand in what is happening in their kids school. School board members should be properly vetted when running for office during town hall type Q&A where parents can ask questions.

Again, no. This book is so obscenely pornographic in its story and images involving underage kids that I don’t even know if I can post what it contains without being banned for violating forum rules.
Ok hold on. I better look at it again. Maybe I'm misremembering if its really that bad.

There is a huge difference in parents speaking out about what is taught to their children and the Taliban. There is a huge difference in censorship and good judgement. Most intelligent adults on the right side of the aisle are perfectly OK with teaching history, including racial history as long as it is factual and presented properly. The CRT version of history is neither of those things. Every historian knows that we study history to prevent the same mistakes and to guide our path forward.
Those radicals on the left that want porn taught in schools are way out of mainstream america. Facts not feelings is what we should be teaching.

Yeah, this book isn’t so-and-so wanders into a sex shop and has some educational epiphany about how the body works and where babies come from. It is straight up graphic pornography both in story and images. You might as well pull a transcript and screenshots from pornhub..if they allowed videos of underage teens.

If the Chair of the meeting tells you to stop reading lengthy excerpts from another source, you are wise to stop reading that material, and go back to discussing your topic. What begins as an effort to persuade, becomes an effort at grandstanding, and a deliberate effort to undermine the authority of the person holding the gavel. Start with the phrase, 'With the permission of the committee, I'd like to read...... into the record' and remember that's what you need.

The reaction was the point. If the material is so profane that it cannot be spoken in a room full of adults then it should not be in the district’s libraries.

I'm fine With romantic teen fiction featuring all kinds of orientations with some exceptions.

No need to be so graphic that it offends even a liberal dominated School board.
Alright comrades. I ventured into the SJW trenches to find out the truth, and read the whole comic so you wouldn't have to. I would like to present you my opinion. Liberal school board members can leave now, as this might offend your sensibilities.

There are three explicitly sexual images in the comic.

One depicts two gay men naked on a Greek pot with the implication that they are going to have sex, in the context of the main character having sexual fantasies. Significantly less explicit than actual historical Greek pottery, btw. The Greeks were wild. I don't think this is problematic, as it's mostly just nudity.

The second is similar, and depicts two men kissing in the main character's thought bubble. They are naked, but you can't see anything. I feel like this is fine as well. For these first two I've seen more sexually explicate things in museums.

Finally, the only real sex scene depicted in the comic, the main characters is shown wearing a strap-on with their partner sucking it. They are in grad school at this point. Definitely sexual. I personally think this is fine (see post earlier about teenage virginity rates) but if you wanted to take issue with the comic being too sexual, this is the most sexual page.

So, all the sexual explicit scenes happen with adults. But what about the CP argument? as far as I can figure the child porn argument is based on a single scene early on in the comic. The main character, a biological female, is shown topless as a prepubescent. They are non-binary, and as a kid wanted to copy what the boys were doing. Now personally, I think it says more about the reader if they think this is a sexual scene, but I'm assuming this is where people are claiming the comic is child porn.

Overall, the comic covers a lot of themes; periods, gender identity (specifically from a non-binary POV), adolescence and becoming an adult, sex and sexuality, a lot of issues specific to trans people, social norms, body positivity. I think it's fine. A lot of the stuff really only applies to trans people, but I imagine someone who is trans would find it interesting, as it basically documents the authors life from childhood to adulthood and the challenge they faced.

The comic, in case you want to go through it yourself.

@Nomad4Ever I appreciate you posting that. I waded through as much as I could and I have several comments to make about it.

First of all, fair warning to all: I'm going to say some things in this post that contradict what I said in previous posts. It isn't because I'm a liar or inconsistent or I was drunk when I posted the first time or drunk now.

I'm saying different things because another poster presented new information that led me to change my mind. This may shock some of you since that is so rare on a political message board. If you have a weak heart, read no further.

First of all, I believe the presenter cherry picked the most explicit part of a lengthy book. In context, that passage is not nearly so jarring.

I don't believe that the school board is unaware of that book's presence in the library and I don't believe they will remove it unless their hand is forced.

I believe that the reason they cut that speaker off is not because they were offended by what he was saying, but because of the phenomena that we are seeing of school boards seeking to silence parents who object to anything.

I still believe that books for school children do not need to speak so explicitly.

I also believe that some of the nudity was unnecessary and was likely included as a selling point for liberal librarians. Apart from the sexual images, there is an image of a boy and girl peeing from behind, obviously meant to convey that the narrator was a biological female. The butt of one of the males kissing is shown, which was not necessary. In general, sex can easily be shown without showing the breast, buttocks and genitals. When films show those parts, there is a reason, and it is rarely that it is important to the story. I can think of maybe five movies where the nudity actually added to the film other than to appeal to the voyeur side of the viewer. (I'll start a thread) I also believe the author hoped the book would be noticed and that the notice would generate profitable publicity. It seems to be working as two of us at least have waded through the ad heavy online version. Ka-ching, indeed.

The nudity on the Greek artifact pictured a large bearded mail sexually interacting with a small bearded male. I don't believe that depicts "two naked gay men," but a man and boy as was common among the Greek philosophers and their economic class. They almost certainly would not have identified as gay, the male on male fellatio was seen as play, not sex in any romantic sense. I would guess this is the child porn reference, not the part with the topless pre-teen who literally had two ink dots for "breasts."

I don't call that child porn. I think a pedophile would get more out of an Underoos ad than that picture.

The strap on scene was the most explicit, especially the first frame. The first frame features the main characters' fantasy of having a penis that is being sucked. So it is not about sucking a strap on, that is a person sucking a penis. Yes, it is in imagination, but it is shown. I'm not shocked by that, who could be? But does it belong on a list of books purchased with tax dollars for a public school library? In a movie, that would be at least an NC17, similar to Brown Bunny and other explicit sex mainstream movies. The next scene the narrator laments that it is only a sensationless strap on with no sensation. The only place I have ever seen a person suck on a strap on is in lesbian BDSM porn or porn featuring a dominatrix and a submissive male sucking the strap on. So, I associate that act with submission. Not sure that's appropriate for high school.

For those parts the book crosses a line in my opinion, and it was not an unintentional line-crossing. It was not the kind of blatant porn that this story might lead us to believe and it had redeeming educational value.

Now, some comment on some other aspects of the book.

This book could fairly be called, "Retro-Hippie Parents are the Worst!" Seriously, they are so into nature that the mom doesn't inform her daughter about her upcoming menstruation cycles and just let her find out the hard way? But they have their children peeing in the yard and using an outhouse? Why not a composting toilet? The disgusting descriptions and depictions of the biological female's mishaps with her fluid seemed almost designed to dispel young men's attraction to girls.

As to the public school depicted, one passage has the narrator saying of her peers with years of public education under their belts, (roughly) "They knew how to paint with water colors, the knew how to string beads. A select few even knew how to read." Did the school board and the librarians not catch the unintentional irony of that?

Anyway, this book does not belong in a public school library in my opinion, but it isn't hugely over the line. Dial back a few parts and I'd be fine with it. If it was publicly discussed and the consensus was to include it, I wouldn't bitch about it. But it seems yet another case of school boards running roughshod over parents and that will stop.
