SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — With the calendar-page turn to 2024 on Monday comes 320 new state laws that Illinois residents will need to navigate.

Some will have a widespread effect, including a law banning semi-automatic rifles and another requiring paid time off. But others won’t have an immediate or noticeable impact, including a law that lets county governments consider a potential contractor’s participation in an approved apprenticeship program in determining the winning low bid for a project.

One law that took effect in 2019 but is still impacting tens of thousands of workers is an increase in the minimum wage. It increases to $14 an hour on Jan. 1 for non-tipped workers and will reach $15 in a year.

Here are some of the other major changes to Illinois state law as of New Year’s Day:

BAN ON SEMI-AUTOMATIC WEAPONS

The U.S. Supreme Court has failed to take up the case of Illinois’ ban on the sale, possession or manufacture of automatic weapons like the type used in a mass shooting at a 2023July Fourthparade in the Chicago suburb of Highland Park.

It's about time. This is why I don't vote for the power-hungry repugs.

Poor Illinois----they never seem to have a chance in the Annual Stupid State Contest. Sometimes they come in 49th or even 50th.

The court will eventually overturn this law. The Supreme Court will eventually hear it. The court doesn't hear cases until they actually affect someone, so until the law goes into effect they are less likely to hear it.

I read the article and I don't know if the ban is on automatic or semi-automatic rifles.

BAN ON SEMI-AUTOMATIC WEAPONS

take up the case of Illinois’ ban on the sale, possession or manufacture of automatic weapons

Upon further research they're banning the sale of semi-automatic rifles and rifle clips over 10 rounds.

If you already own them you must register them with the state police.

They are supposed to be registered by tomorrow. The registration numbers as of last week were less a percent. There may have been an uptick since then, still thats an almost universal FU to the state by several million people not registering their firearms.

With the very pissed off constituents in Chi town the Dems may find themselves in a pickle. We will see. It Illinois looks like it may end up being a possible bell weather.

I curious. Just how many lives is limiting a magazine to 10 rounds going to save. Many handguns will hold up to 17 and that's a difference but how many magazines can you carry? Ever watch trained marksmen reload a clip? Pretty quickly, I don't think this is a huge difference for anyone who is determined to commit this atrocity. The left will claim it as a huge gain but I don't see it in reality. The 3rd most deadly mass shooting is still VA Tech and all the deaths were caused by hand guns. I believe the number was 31.
How about we do a better job of keeping buildings secure, having security personnel and surveillance on campuses and complexes with response ready. Now you will continue to have people, illegallly pocess high capacity magazines, because criminals and nut jobs, don't typically follow the law.

Pistol clips would be limited to 15 rounds. I have watched trained marksmen reload but what percentage of mass murderers are trained marksmen?

So let's do nothing.

Because we'll soon be living in a police state, the greatest fear of gun advocates.

I have guns. I don't want to take away your guns. I want to stop nutjobs and criminals from getting guns. Ideally, any American should be able to own any and every gun he wants. But we've seen that the ideal is a myth and steps must be taken. Background checks and registering guns are necessary. The gun show loophole must be closed.

This is going to be a long, slow process but it's a start.

Can we have a big cheer for Illinois HB2789?

“We are not saying that every book should be in every single library,” said Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias, who is also the state librarian and was the driving force behind the legislation. “What this law does is it says, let’s trust our experience and education of our librarians to decide what books should be in circulation.”

The new law comes into play as states across the U.S. push to remove certain books in schools and libraries, especially those about LGBTQ+ themes and by people of color. The American Library Association in March announced that attempts to censor books in schools and public libraries reached a 20-year high in 2022 — twice as many as 2021, the previous record.

To be eligible for state funds, Illinois public libraries must adopt the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights, which holds that “materials should not be excluded because of the origin, background, or views of those contributing to their creation,” or subscribe to a similar pledge.

Thank you, Illinois.

This nonsensical statute will be overturned, as it directly violates the Second Amendment.

It's DOA. (dead on arrival)
