I think the turn towards the "dumb" started with Palin.

Who would have thought in 2008 that in twelve years someone expressing Palin's views would sound like a reasonably smart republican?

This elected legislator is denying the meaning of words. “It’s not a pandemic.” All the governments of the world disagree, because they have access to a dictionary and can look up the word “pandemic.” This is inexcusably idiotic.

You aren’t making any point here. About five times more people have died from some sort of severe respiratory illness this year than in what would be considered a “bad flu season,” so if we were having a pretty bad flu season this year, but those deaths were being misreported as Covid deaths, we’d still have four times more deaths on top of that to explain.

And even if they were all flu deaths, and there were a vast conspiracy with a made-up virus and there were actually no such thing as Covid, it was just the flu, well that’s still enough flu hospitalizations and deaths happening to be needing to take this just as seriously as we are.
