Well you hear it all the time, someone spends time in prison for many years and is innocent. However, how many of them were accused by their own children of abuse and it wasn't even true.....?

I don't know if I could talk to my kids again for lying like that, I don't know how I would feel.....what about you?

Wash. (July 12) - Former Vancouver police officer Clyde Ray Spencer spent nearly 20 years in prison after he was convicted of sexually molesting his son and daughter. Now, the children say it never happened.

Matthew Spencer and Kathryn Tetz, who live in Sacramento, Calif., each took the stand Friday in Clark County Superior Court to clear their father's name, The Columbian newspaper reported.

Matthew, now 33, was 9 years old at the time. He told a judge he made the allegation after months of insistent questioning by now-retired Clark County sheriff's detective Sharon Krause just so she would leave him alone.

Tetz, 30, said she doesn't remember what she told Krause back in 1985, but she remembers Krause buying her ice cream. She said that when she finally read the police reports she was "absolutely sure" the abuse never happened.
"I would have remembered something that graphic, that violent," Tetz said.
Spencer's sentence was commuted by then-Gov. Gary Locke in 2004 after questions arose about his conviction. Among other problems, prosecutors withheld medical exams that showed no evidence of abuse, even though Krause claimed the abuse was repeated and violent.

Despite the commutation, Spencer remains a convicted sex offender. He is hoping to have the convictions overturned.

Krause declined an interview request from The Columbian in 2005 and could not be reached Friday, the newspaper reported.

Both children said that while growing up in California they were told by their mother, who divorced Spencer before he was charged, that they were blocking out the memory of the abuse.

They said they realized as adults the abuse never happened, and they came forward because it was the right thing to do.

Prosecutors aren't yet conceding that Spencer was wrongly convicted. Senior deputy prosecutor Kim Farr grilled the children about why they are so certain they weren't abused, and chief criminal deputy prosecutor Dennis Hunter said that if the convictions are tossed, his office might appeal to the state Supreme Court.

Matthew Spencer said his father had ruined the relationship with his mother and he had faults, "but none of them were molesting children."

Friday's hearing paved the way for the state Court of Appeals to allow Spencer to withdraw the no-contest pleas he entered in 1985 and have his convictions vacated. Both children had previously filed statements with the appeals court, but the judges required the hearing to ensure their new testimony held up under cross-examination.

Spencer, 61, hugged his son and daughter afterward while a dozen supporters cheered.

Kids Deny Abuse

I never know what to believe with respect to cases like this. The kids wait more than 20 years to clear their father's name? Suddenly, after 20 years they figure out their father never abused them? I just don't know.

Your right Aps, doesn't sound right, why wait so long?

Well I went back to look and this is what it says:

You know, there are similar cases like this.

Children can be easily manipulated say just about anything. Add over protective/revengeful parent(s), and shoddy police questioning, and just about anyone can be sent to jail. There was a case here in Canada where many mambers of a family were sent to prison for abusing children in a day care that they ran. Grandpa, grandma, mom, dad and uncle were convicted of incredibly disgusting sex acts, including satanic rituals.Turns out, none of it was true.

And now, after having more intensively read more details about Michael Jackson, I can honestly say that I think the man was NOT a pedophile. I never would have thought I'd ever think that, but my opinion has changed.

It's really terrible that people go to jail and haven't done anything. My heart goes out to them.....

Regarding Michael, I always felt he never molested a child, even when the news first broke back in 1993 I think it was, I never believed it.

Glad you changed your mind middleground....:2wave:

I read that too. But the son was now 33 years old. He had to be that old to make his own determination?

Looks like that event, not a certain amount of time passing, is what made them change their stories

That's what prompted the daughter. It doesn't say that's what prompted the son. I'm not saying the abuse happened. I just have serious doubts about how after all these years, they have changed their minds.

For me, I give more credibility to statements made contemporaneously with the action(s) in question. I got hit by a car when I was 9 years old. I can tell you I was hit by a fireman while riding my bike and what street I was crossing when it happened. Could I tell you what I was wearing? Nope. Could I tell you the color of the bike I was riding? Nope. But I feel pretty confident I would have been able to provide that kind of detail around the time of the accident.

Well you know, according to the article, the mother says they blocked it in the memories - so they may have said something to the effect of "but mom, I don't remember that happening at all", and she could have pacified them for a few years with the "blocked memory" excuse.

Dumb. I seriously doubt he was convicted on the testimony of his kids alone. It sounds to me like yet another pervert is on the loose.
