I don't get why people are so pissed about Spacey.
1) this is a single accuser recollecting a single incident from 30 years ago.
2) this does sound like either statutory rape or molestation, though Spacey managed to restrain himself when it became clear that it wasn't consensual.
3) Spacey didn't attack his accuser in ANY way. I know a lot of people are going to focus on the negative parts of this, but there's a lot of decency in Spacey's present day response to something he did 30 years ago.
4) i don't know how it was to be a 26 year old gay man in the 80s. I'd love for "the gay card" to have no value, but we're not quite there yet today and this incident was from 30 years ago.
5) i don't know that Spacey took actions to overpower and suppress this story. A lot of the horror about these Weinstein etc stories is how they leverage their power so as to restrain their victim inside a continued pattern of abuse.
So while the fact that Spacey was almost twice as old as this boy was disgusting. The fact that Spacey humped him is disgusting. These things fit under the category of sexual assault, if not also rape. Still, those categories are VERY broad, which is something to keep in mind.
I would also point out that incidents are somewhat inevitable, but we have a habit of, once the momentum has built, smacking all similar events with the same wrecking ball. I would urge caution over carelessness in this regard.
In particular with respect to number 3), i think we need to be prepared to differentiate sexual assailants who show remorse for their actions from sexual assailants who do not. So while i condemn Spacey's actions, i respect his present day response.
