I've been there once, it was strange to see a western looking mall.
Al Shabab is pissed because they lost Mogadishu and most of the country. A little terrorism in Kenya is better than a whole country ruled by terrorists regularly pouring into Kenya.
Why aren't we bringing democracy and freedom to Somalia?
Three of the alleged attackers are from the United States, two are from Somalia and there is one each from Canada, Finland, Kenya and the United Kingdom. Death toll rises to 68 and more than 175 injured.
Yeah that's what I got on it too RDS.....although I didn't have anything on who all the attackers were. Do you have a link on that?
Kenyan forces say they rescued 'most' hostages
Kenya's military said late Sunday it had rescued "most" of the remaining hostages held by al-Qaida-linked militants in an upscale Nairobi mall after launching a major operation to end a two-day standoff that had already killed 68 people.
The military assault, which began shortly before sundown, came as two helicopters circled the mall, with one skimming very close to the roof. A loud explosion rang out, far larger than any previous grenade blast or gunfire volley.
"This will end tonight. Our forces will prevail. Kenyans are standing firm against aggression, and we will win," Kenya's National Disaster Operation Centre said on Twitter
A United States State Department spokeswoman condemned the "despicable massacre of innocent men, women and children." U.S. law enforcement, military and civilian personnel in Nairobi were providing advance and assistance as requested by Kenya, spokeswoman Marie Harf said.
Britain's prime minister, in confirming the deaths of three British nationals, told the country to "prepare ourselves for further bad news."
Westgate Mall is at least partially owned by Israelis, and reports circulated that Israeli commandos were on the ground to assist in the response. Four restaurants inside the mall are Israeli-run or owned.
Kenyans and foreigners were among those confirmed dead, including British, French, Canadians, Indians, a Ghanaian, a South African and a Chinese woman......snip

The Brits are sending a Rapid Deployment Team to help and assist the Kenyans
2011: It has been reported that Israeli "security specialists" are in Nairobi advising Kenya's security services. Without confirming this, Israel's Minister for Strategic Affairs, Yuval Steinitz, told the Associated Press: "Israel is always ready to help other countries, other friendly countries, in combating terrorism."
They're rapid deployment as in consul staff - not anti-terrorist specialists. Luckily, Israel seems to have security advisors nearby advising the Kenyans.
Personally I'd prefer to have seen UK SAS or SBS personnel on the ground doing their bit. (Not that Israel isn't experienced in this - but to prevent any anti-Israel retaliation or feeling afterwards)
