What Rove said however just doesn't seem racist. Had he said "He is charismatic. He is an articulate black man" I'd probably be the first to scream off with his head.

Look, simply calling a person "articulate" is not racist. Obama clearly IS articulate. This doesn't make him qualified to be President, but it is very articulate and communicates very well with his audience. What is racist about saying these things?

It is generally used to describe those who haven't- in the opinion of the speaker- any real right to be "articulate", and from whom "articulateness" is unexpected and surprising; note-worthy.
A rather condescending way to refer to a Harvard grad like Obama, I'll agree.
One would expect facility with words to be the norm rather than the exception, amongst those who graduate from the top-ranking University not only in the nation but also in the world. Bush, I would think, would be the remarkable one, the exception. An inarticulate Harvard grad such as Bush would seem worthy of comment.
Whereas, an articulate one seems more or less par for the course... unless it's the blackness of the Harvard grad in question, which makes the fact that he's articulate remarkable and worthy of comment in the mind of the speaker.

(On the other hand, it's possible Rove meant no harm. It's a compliment, after all, if a rather back-handed one. Tempest in a teapot, if you ask me.)

COULTER: When Gerald Ford died a few weeks ago, all of the coverage kept saying, you know, coyly suggesting that he was a mediocrity, that he had never passed any major legislation, never passed any major legislation -- which, you know, on one hand, we're Republicans; we don't want them passing legislation, we want them repealing legislation -- but leaving that point aside, I mean, everything they were saying to point out how little qualified Ford was as this accidental president is surely true, you know, tenfold in the case of Obama. And I do think it does show -- it further confirms my point that Democrats are racist, and they're just stunned to find a black man who can walk and talk. And, you know, not being a racist, I'm not really that impressed with a black man who can walk and talk. I knew that.
