And here I called her a Marxist! What was I thinking!

The inevitable food shortages and long Soviet-style food lines this insane policy will create will do a great deal to fight the obesity problem in the USA.

Laws against gouging are not price controls......jeesh

She's already told us who she is. The flip-flopping, word salad queen, ie puppet II.

The consensus is in. Putting price controls on food is a no.

Price controls are a bad idea. All they do is cause bigger problems. Then what?

"People are paying a lot more for food, gas, cars and services, and inflation isn’t over yet as the pandemic continues to distort the economy. So should governments consider setting the price of essential goods?

It’s been done before, typically during times of crisis, but for most mainstream economists, the answer to this question is a resounding “no.” Limiting how much companies can charge will distort markets, they argue, causing shortages and exacerbating supply chain problems while only temporarily reducing inflation.

“Price controls can of course control prices — but they’re a terrible idea,” David Autor, a professor of economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, remarked in a survey published earlier this month by the University of Chicago.

Asked whether price controls similar to those used in the United States during the 1970s could reduce inflation over the next year, less than a quarter of economists surveyed said they agree while nearly 60% said they disagree or strongly disagree."

PLease cite a state that does not have anti gouging legislation.

Texas:

Having said that it looks like she is going to push more enforcement of monopoly laws to protect against business concentrations. I imagine we'll see a lot more than that Friday.

MAGAs don't understand the difference.

It's the same thing with tariffs - they quite literally don't understand how they work.

For most MAGA, "price controls" is a trigger phrase like "caravans" and "drag shows" - they don't need to know what they are, how they differ from anti-monopolistic controls, etc. They just need to scream the phrase loudly, causing their bodies to produce hormones that generate feelings of physical pleasure.

“There’s a big difference between fair pricing in competitive markets, and excessive prices unrelated to the costs of doing business,” the Harris campaign said in a statement. “Americans can see that difference in their grocery bills.

Democrats oppose price gouging.
Republicans champion price gouging and higher prices at the grocery store.

Also Republicans, blame Democrats for price gouging and higher prices at the grocery store, and claim they also oppose it.

The train never stops, in crazy land MAGA.

How would banning price gouging by mega corporations create: "Long soviet-style food lines? "
That makes no sense.

How did you arrive at this absurd conclusion, sufficient to make a thread about it? Share your reasoning and citations so we can help correct your errors.
Or where you just making shit up?

Soviet Union use to do this. Stores sold out by 1:00. Party leaders had their own stores with unlimited supplies.
Stores sold out because there was insufficient production. You're arguing that prices should be such that only the wealthy get the goods. Thats way better!

MAGA: "We can't afford groceries! The price of BEEF! Agh!"

Harris: "I'm going to work on price gouging legislation so corporations cant overcharge!"

MAGA:" What a commie!!! SOCIALISM!!!!!"

For Chrissakes you people are just unhappy with your lives no matter what. At least admit it.

This is spot on.

The Trump era has ingrained this in me. Modern conservatives just want to be angry about stuff.

Trying to find logic for the rationale is a fool's errand.

Ok then, just pay more.

Ok then, just pay more.

I'd rather pay more than accepting her commie initiatives but you do you.

From the O/P source...
"Harris will also call on the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and state attorneys general to probe companies that are thought to be ripping off consumers by raising prices to pad their profits, according to The Hill. Additionally, Harris will propose to have the government intervene against corporate mergers and acquisitions that she contends would further allow a small number of companies to milk consumers for even more profit."

price gouging AFTER a disaster

From the citation:

Harris will announce the plan during a Friday speech detailing her economic agenda in North Carolina, where she will blame corporate consolidation and greed for the increased prices Americans are paying for their food and groceries, according to The Hill. The proposal to attribute inflation to corporate greed echoes a common refrain from the Biden administration, which has consistently tried to pin responsibility for inflation on price gouging instead of its massive spending agenda.

"blame corporate consolidation and greed for the increased prices"

Shows you exactly how out of touch with reality the people which are proposing price controls as a solution because:

"responsibility for inflation" . . "its massive spending agenda"

this is the real root of the problem, with this:

The Consumer Price Index for “food at home” — which includes many items commonly purchased at grocery stores — is up by about 21% since 2021, the year that the Biden administration came into power, according to Axios.

as it's result and impact.

Soviet Union use to do this. Stores sold out by 1:00. Party leaders had their own stores with unlimited supplies.

What does Trump's favorite foreign country and political ally, have to do with price gouging limits proposed by the Harris campaign?

Can you be specific about how banning price gouging by rich corporations, is a bad thing for most people, and how allowing price gouging is a good thing for most consumers?

Limiting how much companies can charge will distort markets, they argue, causing shortages and exacerbating supply chain problems while only temporarily reducing inflation.

“Price controls can of course control prices — but they’re a terrible idea,” David Autor, a professor of economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, remarked in a survey published earlier this month by the University of Chicago.

Nothing in that biased article says that Harris wants price controls. This sentence from the article says it all:
Harris’ forthcoming proposal to crack down on price gouging sounds like a “euphemism” for “price controls,” Antoni added.

No, cracking down on gouging is not price controls but shows the desperation pro-Trump media have become.
