Just can't wait for the liberal excuses which are sure to follow
What excuses. What are we actually talking about here.
We never and I do mean never understood where we where in Afghanistan. We never understood who we were dealing with and how transactional they are. I have often chided that Americans have become incredibly transactional in how they view their politics. The average Afgan is an American to the 3rd power transactional in his everyday life, never mind his politics as I posted earlier today.
As soon as the Doha deal was done, the Taliban went off and started to cut deals with the Tribal chiefs with the security heads, with the government officials, with the officer class in the Afghan army, all people that were feeding from the trough of US greenbacks upon which the country floated. The argument they used to flip them. The gravy train is coming to an end. The result, the Taliban literally took the entire country without firing a shot.
Why we did not know at a very fundamental level that the die was cast as soon as Doha was struck is beyond me.
- Did we know and ignored what we knew?
- Did we not think it possible for the Taliban to cut so many deals so quickly, from Doha till now and them time their implementation so that the entire country fell like a house of cards?
Seems to me we are all clamoring about whether or not we can get our people out now and get the interpreters and their families out at this point. Had we even thirty more days, this would not even be a question. I do think its reasonable to think that we might have had thirty more days to get out and just as reasonable to think that in the last ten days the Taliban would accomplish more than we would have expected in terms of territory in sixty days. Hard to calculate that everybody was bought off in deals with the Taliban and thus nobody would fight. Then again we set the stage for that because we were buying off anybody that counted for anything ourselves.
There is and has been so much double dealing going on in Afghanistan I am not even convinced that the Taliban will be as vicious in their handling of the Interpreters. The Taliban has run into the biggest lottery win of their lives. They have more US military equipment than they know what to do with. They have the entire country. They have all the bases. They may end up so drunken on success that they are for at least a time magnanimous for the most part. That said I am sure there are some number that will be as ruthless as ever. I just don't think that in general that will be the case.
Do we have to get our people and the Interpreters and their families out? Yes we do and we cannot at this point depend on Taliban largess though they might just be magnanimous for a time.
Beyond that we need to finally learn the pitfalls, the costs, the utter lunacy of this Nation Building nonsense. Then I want to know why we did not figure out what would happen virtually as soon as the Doha deal was struck. The date the clock started was February 29, 2020 with an expiration date in May 2021.
