Im used to it now. Just another weekend of street violence and murder in Chicago.

Five men were shot to death and one was fatally stabbed in Labor Day weekend violence in Chicago.
On Saturday, a 38-year-old man was killed in a drive-by shooting while walking on the 6500 block of South California Avenue about 2:50 p.m. on the city's Southwest side.
Two men, ages 18 and 34, were shot and killed while standing in the 2900 block of West Adams Street. A driver pulled out a gun at about 12:45 p.m. Saturday, police said, and shot the men. They were pronounced dead at 1:22 p.m. and 1:25 p.m. at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital.
Earlier Saturday, a 32-year-old man in a wheelchair was struck by a man who walked up to him at 1:45 a.m. on the sidewalk in the 5400 block of West Division Street. Police said the gunman fired and hit him the neck, head and back.
Two men were stabbed, one killed, in an early Saturday morning fight in Lincoln Park in the 1100 block of West Wrightwood Avenue. One man died of stabs to the chest and abdomen, while the other man, stabbed in the buttocks, survived.
Weekend violence began Friday when a man was shot and killed while sitting on a Hamilton Park bench in the 10000 block of South Wentworth Avenue. Shots were fired from behind the field house, according to police. He was pronounced dead at 9:36 p.m.
No one is yet in custody in connection to the murders.

Sad. I would say that the violence seems to be segregated geographically.

Also, I'd be willing to pay extra in taxes to support a stronger police force. No question about that.

Im all for the National Guard to patrol the streets. This crap is out of control. Why in the HELL cant people be respect each other!?! Killing another human is abominable. :(

If the city of Chicago Politics would allow decent, law abideing American citizens to carry concealed firearms. The crime rate would shurley drop. It's only common sence and logical.
But Chicago is not your everyday politically logical city.....Look what came out of it to become a President.

Chicago's a great city to live in, and allowing concealed weapons will do nothing to change the crime rate, in my view.

If you want to fight crime and poverty you need to make more jobs available to the people in the low-income, high crime areas so we can get kids off the streets and out of the reach of the gangs. You don't fight crime by adding more guns into the mix, that's just nonsense.

Some people have got to stop listening to the squirrels in the heads.

Chicago use to be a nice city back in the 50's and 60's.....Today it's a lower class, crime filled city as equal too New York or Detroit.
With all those Black street gangs on one side of of town, and Puorto Rican Gangs on the other. It's a no win situation.

The Chicago Police are wimps or most are payed-off by drug cartels to ignore the crimes.
The politics starting with that Daley family power hand, have been corrupt for years. Why do you think Obama is the way he is....schooled by the best corrupt socialist minds.

The more I think about it....Yep!...Let them commit the crime over there. They all deserve each others ignorance.

If you want to cut down on crime, the only solution is to legalize drugs. That will cut the legs out from under the gangs and cartels. Until you do that, it doesn't matter how much money you spend on police. Crime isn't going anywhere.

Im all for the National Guard to patrol the streets.

Federal agencies have no business interfering with State affairs.

Chicago's problem is and always has been corruption. You can't fight crime effectively when the police force cannot even control its own internal crime.

To be honest, I don't know how much that would help in this situation. The thing is, almost all of this violence is gang violence, and gang members are already gonna be carrying concealed weapons, no matter what the law says. Putting more legal weapons in homes and on the street will cut down on crimes like mugging and robbery and assault, but it won't do much for gang violence.

that is just plain silly. many years ago I lived in a little city that had a fairly low crime rate but a mugging or two a week. Two thugs decided to mug a pizza guy and mistook me for him. I didn't have a pizza but a 9mm and I seriously messed up the intestinal integrity of one of the thugs. when the DA noted how many people had carry permits in that city, the thugs got some education and there wasn't another mugging for months.

You do fight crime if the criminals get shot. Of course leftwing politicians hate people having that power and they ban guns to make honest people more dependent on the government. What the morons who ran chicago did was to make sure only criminals were armed

TD- I'm not 100% anti-gun, and I think Americans have a right to own one if they have no criminal record and get proper licensing, ect, but my opinion is that less weapons circulating around the city will = less of a chance of being met with a violent death via gunshot.

If you don't think that more jobs and more income going into a particular area won't reduce the crime rate, then that's just plain silly, too. People with money have no need to mug anyone.

Where I live, I haven't seen a mugging in two years.

You can back this up with documentation or are you pulling this out of your butt? How much are they paid and by whom?

The politics starting with that Daley family power hand, have been corrupt for years.

Compared to what?

Why do you think Obama is the way he is....schooled by the best corrupt socialist minds.
Daly was a socialist? Who were the other socialists and in how were their socialist minds corrupted compared to most socialist minds?

The more I think about it....Yep!...Let them commit the crime over there. They all deserve each others ignorance.

You base this on facts? None of which you have provided, I might add.

Begone, Poe! Nobody can actually be as retarded as you pretend to be.

here is what the evidence shows

1) more guns in the hands of honest people=less crime

2) more armed thugs-more crime

gun restrictions beyond banning thugs from having guns only restricts #1

hence cities with idiotic gun laws tend to be a lot less safe than ones where honest people can be armed.

your comments about economics may or may not matter but they have nothing to do with armed citizens

Economics has a lot to do with it. Crime is influenced by many factors, and most places in Chicago that enjoy a middle to high socio-economic status also enjoy low crime, especially non-domestic violent crime. Whereas the low SES areas have high crime, especially non-domestic violent crime. This is typically true in any city, regardless of the gun laws in that city.

The biggest problem with always jumping on Chicago's gun laws is that those arguments fail to account for all factors involved, including the fact that a large portion of those who get murdered in Chicago are criminals who have guns themselves. Hell, I'd be willing to bet that at least three of the six victims of this weekend's murders were thugs themselves. Most occurred in poorer neighborhoods (all but one, I believe, and the exception was the stabbing, which was a bar fight in a affluent neighborhood with a ****-ton of bars).

I guess that is a long winded way of saying chicago's stupid gun laws are just stupid

North side/South side. North side is the good side, stay away from the south side.

Also, I'd be willing to pay extra in taxes to support a stronger police force. No question about that.

This is Chicago PD we're talking about. You can pay extra taxes, that just means extra bribes. The police won't patrol the South side that well.

TD – I get it. More guns in the hands of law-abiders will mean that they will (potentially) be able to better defend themselves. May be somewhat of a deterrent for muggers too.

But as Tucker mentioned (and as you completely ignore), those largely who are being murdered aren’t law abiding citizens. One of the biggest issues is gang members murdering other gang members.

Please explain to me how by simply making it easier for law abiding citizens to obtain and conceal a gun will in any way reduce gang violence?

I’d argue it’d increase gang violence as they will now have greater access to guns and will be more motivated to recruit outside members (who have no police record) to buy them weapons.

Your solution of making gun access easier is a shallow one - in my opinion - which does in no way address the core issue, which is:

Why are people shooting each other in the first place?

several problems in your statement

its illegal for criminals to own guns federally. chicago's laws only ban honest people from having guns. If you violate a federal ban on gun ownership its pretty much a sure bet you are going to ignore a city ban as well

most of those murdered are criminals and most of those doing the murdering already have records. yet that leaves a large number of honest people who are targeted for other crimes such as rape and robbery. arming honest people tends to cut down on crimes against them

gang violence may not be reduced by allowing people who aren't criminals to bear arms but gang violence is not decreased by any level with gun bans. The burden should be on banners to prove their bans work and so far they have completely failed to do that.

Out of curiosity, is there any evidence that rape significantly decreases with permissive gun laws? From all I've read, most rapes that are committed by people who are not strangers to their victims.

Also, I believe that Chicago's burglary rates per capita are actually superior to many cities with more permissive gun laws.

While I agree that Chicago's gun laws are stupid and don't do what they are claimed to do, your claims of what will improve in the absence of those laws aren't in keeping with the data that I am aware of.

burglary is the crime of breaking and entering to steal from UNOCCUPIED homes. robbery involves such activity with occupied homes. Burglary is very high in the USA due to thieves being scared of being shot. Home invasion robberies are much lower-in terms of relative percentages-than in other countries due to the presence of armed individuals

Good point. Brain fart on my part.

Chicago's robbery rates are higher than many cities, but they are very close to Houston and slightly above Dallas (which has a similar rate as San Francisco) which are two comparably-sized cities that have much more permissive gun laws than Chicago. But if we look at New York's robbery rates (one of the cities with the most restrictive gun laws) they have a much lower rate than any of the cities I have mentioned thus far, and much lower than many cities with permissive gun laws.

These data don't support the claim that high robbery rates are caused by restrictive gun laws.
