If people paid attention to history in school they would have learned all slaves were freed in January 1865 with the passing of the 13th Amendment.
WHAT'S the point of a national holiday telling people what they should already know - if they went to school?

We have to keep in mind, Texas was essentially leaderless.

They were taking orders from the exact government and military that had just cowed and decapitated their State by killing so many Texans, they had to surrender or die.

So yeah, they didn't say "pip pip cheerio" and happily follow the orders of the United States Army that had just whipped them.
