Yes they do want them put in jail. They have suggested it on more than 1 occasion and have attempted to pass legislation to that effect. They believe the people who lawfully provide firearms should be put on trial when a firearm is misused. It is the same concept that the right is applying to certain books that they have concluded are dangerous.
Here is a bipartisan example for you. Consider Drunk drivers who get into accidents. people on both the right and the left are fine with holding the person providing the alcohol culpable for the actions of the drunk.
