There may be no better time for John Oliver to recruit his viewers to a cause than this bleak Monday morning when everyone is groggily trying to shake off their daylight saving hangover. But if three cups of coffee and a video of Ryan Gosling dancing isn’t enough to wake you up, then maybe some mild outrage will do it. As part of his ongoing “Why Is This Still a Thing?” segment, Oliver tackles daylight saving time, which, contrary to popular belief, has nothing to do with farmers or their stupid cows.

an excellent debunking of the stupid, pointless ritual of clock switching.

LOL. My mom always referred to it as "right time" and "wrong time"

i refer to it as clock switching, or "****ing dumb ass useless ****ing clock switching" to be more specific. it's so ****ing frustrating when the obvious solution is to just move the damned clocks ahead and leave them there permanently. then all of the people who can't get flex time at work and desperately need that "extra" hour of daylight in the evening can just have it all year. switching the clocks back for a couple of months is dumber than ****. we wouldn't even have it here if it weren't for our stupid ass previous governor who forced it down our throats. and guess what? energy consumption actually INCREASED after DST was enacted.

****ing clock switchers.

I was visiting a city that sat next to a time zone change when DST started. After about two days, we just gave up on trying to do anything that was time dependent like go to a movie or make a reservation as we were already staying in one time zone and going out to places in another one and it got even more confusing. It was kind of liberating though to abandon time for a week.

I watched this last night.. and wholly agree..... though I was kinda surprised to learn it wasn't about helping farmers, and i'm still not sure about that.

his piece on the US territories was also pretty damned good
" the American flag should be a picture of an American Samoan holding a flag of a picture of a man from Guam holding the American flag"... pretty funny stuff.

as i told the wife last night... new technologies afford me the luxury of ignoring daylight savings time... my cell phone and cable box changes the time automatically and i'm retired, so no alarm clock, no scheduled wake up times.... time simply doesn't mean much to us anymore.
( I wake well before sunrise, no matter what time of year....usually around 0330)

Saskatchewan does it right, almost. Just to make things interesting most of the province doesn't change time, but some part do.

Current Time in Saskatchewan

I like the extra hour of daylight at the end of the day. Sorry guys.

As for keeping Daylight Savings Time all year long, that was tried in 1974. Wasn't good:
Year-round daylight saving time was implemented from January 6, 1974, to February 23, 1975. The move spawned significant criticism because it forced many children to travel to school before sunrise. The prior rules were restored in 1976.[citation needed]

Kids were out in the freaking dark walking to school or waiting for buses.

For us Northerners, it's pretty freaking dark in the morning during PST as it is and I don't live in the most northern reaches.

post of the decade.

I just don't care either way...I like the extra hour of sleep, when that day comes it always seems to come at the perfect time.

Tell that to my dog. The poor dear, as huge as she is, looks at me with a face saying "you want me to do what in the dark"?

this is the go to reason, and the main argument used to defend clock switching. where i live, it's still pretty dark when they wait on the bus, and almost all of them wait inside anyway. i know this because i get caught behind the busses on the way to work pretty often. install more streetlights. that would be better than subjecting everyone to a fairly significant inconvenience twice a year.

spring forward and don't fall back. everyone wins, even the kids.

I seriously do not get all the angst over daylight savings time. The change happens twice a year. It's only an hour. You seriously cannot adjust an hour either way in your daily life?

Having said that, I would prefer we pick one and stick with it, but only for simplicity sake.

Well, and maybe also to get the whiners to shut the eff up.

when it's utterly pointless and can be solved by permanent, DST?

no. i'm not willing to reset my schedule for something that is useless. move the clocks forward, and leave them the **** alone.

:mrgreen:I am calling for a boycott. Lets show up for work at the usual time.

I love school on dark days.

I also love dark and gloomy days in general.

I ain't normal I guess... D:

There you go. Let's quit calling it Daylight savings time, and instead make its official title "dumb ass useless ****ing clock switching." That'll show Kaiser Wilhelm he didn't win the war.

Plus, let's change dumb ass useless ****ing clock switching so that we set the clocks ahead at 4:00 P.M. on Friday, but set them back during the weekend. That should at least get some support from the nine to fivers.

it's hilarious, i made that same argument at work. i said that if i'm ever governor, i'm going to set the clocks to five PM on Friday and leave them there. PWT, permanent weekend time.

I lived in a city in 1974. Loads of streetlights, but sending a kid out in the dark, is still sending a kid out in the dark. Morning or night. It's dangerous, especially in bad weather. The kids here don't wait inside. They go to the end of their block which is connected to the main road. Making them go out when it would be even darker, is not safe.

But I do understand your frustration. I hate losing the hour and the mornings in the first week, suck. But then I'm good with all the light in the evening. :)

Brilliant! I could support that! Makes much better sense.

Well, you live in the right location then.

I don't mind the dark and gloomy when I get to stay in.

i like it, too, but wouldn't mind having it all year.

you have to understand my specific situation : we never had to do the clock dancing ritual, and then our former governor forced it on us against public opinion. therefore, we have a unique view of clock switching and how pointlessly ****ing annoying it is.

net result : it didn't do **** to help business, and now we use more energy than we did before. big surprise.

Yeah always the "think of the children" crowd protest, but i saw on another site briefly that "spring forward" monday has 25% more heart attacks than an average monday. Is that really worth it?

Could also just allow individual areas to decide for themselves...

Northern indiana tried this forever, until the business owners cried that it was costing them $. Guess it had little to do with school bus safety for them at least
