John Oliver and Will Ferrell Offer Replacement Song for Lee Greenwood’s ‘God Bless the USA’ That’s Honest About America | Video (1 Viewer)

"This Land is Your Land" is the best song about America....

I think it's ridiculous. They used to sing "God Save The King" in theatres after the movie. Imagine proposing bringing that back? If sports teams abandoned the national anthem for one season and then someone suggested bringing it back they'd get shouted down.
Do we really need to reinforce our patriotism every time a crowd is together in one place? I mean, feeling kinship with those around you is all nice and snuggy but forcing it is counter-productive.
I guess I don't see it as that big of a deal I'm not sure I'd miss it if I didn't see it at some event but I was in a youth group as a boy that was focused on good citizenship.

Dead White European Males? Don't get it.

Songs that glorify killing don't appeal to me, but then I don't subscribe to the American exceptionalism creed. I like this kind of music.

I miss Prine, saw him 3 times in concert. So amazing.

I love Will and that was ****ing awesomely accurate! :ROFLMAO:

I'm not a huge fan of his movies, but he is an exceedingly nice guy, he came in and rented an e-bike from my sister, and had the tech take him for a ride through Papago Park and Tempe Town Lake.

Ask the Native Americans how they feel about god blessing the genocide carried out by the white Euro 'christian' invaders when they claimed this piece of land for their own. But the present day white nationalists love this song so there's that.
LOL. The world is made up of the conquerors and the conquered. It's just the way it is.

"Might makes right" is your philosophy?

Yeah? You're living in the past. My wife is Metis, Micmaw, and neither she nor I are conqueror or conquered. The story isn't over till they say it's over.

You can get diabetes from listening to Lee Greenwood.

I don't know. The report said, "Lee Greenwoods song". God Bless America was written by Irving Berlin.

Who knows? Never heard of "God Bless the USA".
Who cares... the point was the immigrants are good people and welcome in the United States.

Old news reels?
Sucks when stuff that was current events in my lifetime is history to other people!
Ah well, getting old is still better than the alternative.
Yes, it is, and now I wince when I hear "Hope I die before I get old" (for non-geezers, the band was The Who, and the song was "Talkin' Bout My Generation"). My, but Roger Daltry changed his mind!

My memory needs help. When would you have seen/heard her live growing up? Surely, she wasn't on Lawrence Welk. Ed Sullivan maybe? Maybe at sporting events?

Re DWEMS, your "white Euro 'christian' invaders."

Except that you aren't really talking about a genre or style of music; you're talking about liking the world view expressed in songs such as this one, yes?

I like nearly every genre of music. In my experience as a lifelong musician, every genre is about 95% crap, and you need to find the brilliant 5%.;)

I was all about The Who as a teen-ager. Everyone else argued about the Beatles and the Stones but I thought Live At Leeds was the best rock album ever made! Only changed my mind when Quadrophenia came out.

Kate Smith? I only ever saw her when she sang God Bless America at Philadelphia Flyers games.

You could have made that more clear. Google results say dead white european males.

Yes. To me, that's what folk music is about.

I've been a lifelong folk artist myself (until arthritis set in). I believe I've found the brilliance in that genre.

Oh! I didn't realize you'd heard her live at games. I remember from film clips a large lady in evening gowns.

Why? What's it got to do with the thread topic?

Sorry. DWEMS has been around at least since at least 1990, so 35 years. Oh, well, all that matters is that they are responsible for everything wrong in the world. ;)

"Lee Greenwood’s song “God Bless the USA” has long been a staple of naturalization ceremonies for immigrants to the United States, but John Oliver thinks it’s time for a change. So, will the help of Will Ferrell, he’s created an alternative.

To close out his show on Sunday night, Oliver reflected on his own immigration process to the U.S., which indeed ended with a music video for Greenwood’s song. The presence of it got Oliver curious, so he dug into the details of how it came to be a piece of the ceremony. As it turns out, the government began using it on their own, and when Greenwood found out, his team forced the USCIS into a settlement deal that now sees the singer get $700 a year for use of the song. Naturally, Oliver mocked the move, and most of Greenwood’s attempts to monetize, well, everything, including attempting to trademark the phrase “God Bless the USA.”

Oliver was particularly amused by Greenwood releasing a version of the song for Canada, in which he didn’t really change any lyrics of the song beyond the ones that referenced America.

“All of this is to say, for multiple reasons, I’d argue Lee Greenwood’s song should never again be played at citizenship ceremonies, because they deserve one genuinely unique to this country,” Oliver said."

Tune is killer.

Speaking of...Greenwood "remade" the song for Canada and kept the same tune, but changed up a few words.

Much of it, yes, especially in the Americas. ;)

Only much of it? :p
