the Publican was humble and recognized his sinful condition; the first step in coming to God.
Yes with an honest heart.
the Pharisees were NOT living a holy life. they demanded that Jesus be crucified.
thousands followed Jesus, people like you and me, those are the ones that God will save if we keep his Commandments.
We are all partially responsible for Jesus being crucified. I fear if Jesus came and walked into a church today, He would be crucified once again. The hypocrisy has not gone anywhere, as it's still alive and well in this world.
Nota, when we study the bible Systematically we note that God has given us Complete instructions throughout. we can't say that just acknowledging our sinful life is sufficient when God demands a new life from us.
It's a new creation from God, not us...
(2Co 5:16) Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more.
(2Co 5:17) Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
(2Co 5:18) And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
(2Co 5:19) To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
"Christ in you, the hope of glory" is a great thing. It's a new life, for as the Father was in Christ, now the risen/glorified Christ can come to be in us......that Life is our inheritance for we too are members of the family of God.
i tell people the Whole Truth and refuse to deceive as many ministers do, that we are fine living in adultery, drunkenness et al. God wants better from us and will get that if we yield to what God demands.
Galatians 5 is a perfect example of where God wants us to be with him on a daily basis, then the Book of James describes a christian's faith AND works.

Amen, admittedly I have lots of work ahead of me.
