How many times does the left have to learn the same lesson? Rent control is a progressive policy that fails everywhere it's tried, yet Kamala Harris supports it.

Argentina's recent repeal of rent control by libertarian President Javier Milei has led to a surge in housing supply, with the freedom to negotiate contracts, previously restricted, directly causing a drop in rental prices.

Milei, a self-described "anarcho-capitalist" known for his free-market approach, repealed the 2020 Rental Law, enacted by former leftist President Alberto Fernández, which had imposed restrictions on landlords and led to a significant decline in rental availability.

...

Since Millei's repeal of rent control laws took effect on December 29, the supply of rental housing in Buenos Aires has jumped by 195.23%, according to the Statistical Observatory of the Real Estate Market of the Real Estate College (CI).

Just goes to show socialism is a total fail. Put socialists in charge of a desert and youll get a shortage of sand. Go Millei!

Rent control is a demonstratably failed policy.

A better way to supply housing is to remove barriers to construction, such as zoning requirements and certain other requirements, such as off street parking, setbacks, etc.

Let's see how much rents rise. How many people get evicted. Too soon to call this a success.

There’s more supply because everyone is homeless now…

Notice how they always have a problem with rent control, but never any problem with elitist zoning regulations.

We seem to have a different problem with the number of cost burdened renters hitting an all-time high and rental stock having significant investment needs.

Lol... Elvis Trump is not doing so hot, and Newsweek is spouting nonsense as usual.

People couldn't afford rent, so more apartments became available.

The housing supply isn't really increasing substantially. There are just more vacant homes because people can't afford it.

https://www.reuters.com/graphics/ARGENTINA-ECONOMY/gkpldrqdjpb/ Constructions jobs were crashing during the first 6 months of Milei's term.

Still, construction dropped 22.2 per cent, manufacturing fell 17.4 per cent and retail activity slipped 15.7 per cent, INDEC said.

If the housing supply was truly skyrocketing, then construction jobs would not be crashing.

If no one is building new homes, new homes aren't being built.

Housing supply skyrockets could just as easily be homeless population skyrockets.

Meanwhile tiny less than even hotel room spaces go for 2k a month rent in new york. Yay freeberty?

...

Argentina is a Nazi-infested dictatorship.

Rent control stays. It keeps greed in check.

So new builds or people had to leave the city as they could no longer afford to live there.

Given the time frame I suspect the latter was the biggest influence rather than the former.

Exactly. To claim the housing supply increase alone is the success is pretty daft when not factoring in what happens to the people affected by rent control.

The cold truth....

For there to be an increase of 192% in rental housing supply means that there was rich owners who were sitting on housing supply with no tenants and no income.... let that sink in.

Sorry, but zoning regulations are most draconian in Progressive districts. The hypocrisy is in full display.

I hope you learned something today.

In all fairness, the vast majority of cities are very liberal, even cities in red states. Houston has virtually no zoning but elected the first lesbian mayor of a major city in the country.
