I have a hybrid drawl that I can turn on or off at will. Catch myself slipping into it when around people with southern accents.Congratulations on discovering the art of code-switching!
What you should do now is learn what it is and how it's relevant for minority communities in this country before you expose too much of your ignorance. I can code-switch in two languages, and it comes in pretty handy as a communication tool. It's helpful if used properly and if the code-switching you're doing is genuine to your background. For example, I grew up in a minority neighborhood where I learned the local English and Spanish slang, but was educated well enough to speak both languages properly as well, so I can code-switch effectively in both languages. Had I not had exposure to the slang in my environment and learned it indirectly, then it can come off as pandering because there are nuances to how one code-switches which comes from direct experience.
And I’m pretty white. Main accent southern Californian.
