Jan 6 hearings, a fiasco?

Two things to add to this thread as I get caught up on my recordings of Sat/Sun shows.

First, Chuck Todd was pretty good when he posed the question of why not have subpoenaed Trump a month or 3 or 6 ago and how this RIGHT at election time subpoena might look, lol.

Second, SNL did a fine job of summing up the 1/6 committee this weekend. If you missed it, you might want to google it because the opening was great!!!!

SNL was as funny as they get in the modern era, I got it.

If the committee had issued the subpeona 6 months ago the objections would have been that it wasn't thorough enough. If it had been issued 2 months ago the objections would have been that it was a deflection from the search. If they wanted to influence the election they could've waited until October the 29th. If they waited until after the election to issue the subpeona they would be accused of taking an important step as a lame-duck committee. When is the best time?

When was the last time a congressional committee hearing got 17 million live viewers???

It was a few of the other J6 select committee hearings earlier this year.

Ok so what other committee got anything close and how long ago?

27 million Americans saw Joe McCarthy in 1954 being revealed as shameless.

The Watergate hearings in '74 ?
"According to A.C. Nielsen, the company behind Nielsen TV ratings, an estimated three out of four American households tuned in to the hearings at one point or another."

CSPAN is so jealous!!! I watch CSPAN sometimes when all the networks are carrying an event, like the debates in 2020. I wonder sometimes I might be the only one watching cspan.
How many people call themselves independent recently? 17 million saw our Reps say the bitter truth out loud. It's their job.

Wow , 17 million, to me that's a good number. Now look at the fellow I met. He is partisan and strong leaning, but his message is for any voter.

Trump was always invited to testify.

SNL did a typically stupid political satire, for stupid people.

What's that saying? The one about the definition of insanity?
Repeating the same lie over and over and over, then insanely expecting that lie to morph into truth if it's repeated enough times? That "definition of insanity"?

And - the ratings and polls show that the hearings aren't doing anything to help the Dems.
The "hearings" are/were 'not' about "helping the Dems." Where did you hear that lie? The Vice Chairman of the 1/06/2021 Committee is a lifelong Republican politician, if you're not aware of that 'fact.' The hearings are about finding out who knew what about what happened on 1/06/2021, what their respective involvement , if any, was in the 1/06/2021 insurrection, and who committed what crimes, if any, regarding what happened on 1/06/2021 at the U.S. Capitol. These 'facts' wouldn't need to be explained to you if you had actually watched the hearings yourself, as opposed to accepting on blind faith what 'others' said about the hearings.

Everybody knows what it's for, that's why it's even on prime time tv! :)
It's trying hard like a reality tv. Unfortunately, it flopped.

....and, it didn't make any difference. 🤷

Thirty-eight percent of respondents thought former President Trump was directly responsible for Jan. 6, compared to 42 percent who said so in June just before a hearing that featured explosive testimony from White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson.
But after those hearings, 32 percent of respondents said Trump did nothing wrong regarding Jan. 6, compared to 30 percent who gave that response in June. Just 5 percent of Republicans view Trump as directly responsible, according to the poll.

“The sensational revelations during the hearings do not seem to have moved the public opinion needle on Trump’s culpability for either the riot or his spurious election fraud claims,” said Patrick Murray,
Monmouth University Polling Institute’s director.

I think, these hearings are hurting the Dems a whole lot more than they do the Republicans.
The hearings shows Dem are more focused into something that's becoming so "petty" when compared to the crisis that's gripping America.

Trump on their brain is like an irritating habit hard to stop, an addiction which keeps coming back and just will not go away. It's the left's undoing and the simple reason for their historically uprooting about to take place on the political scene. But it will be everybody else's fault as the fault finding and blame games will keep going.....the American People are Sick and Tired of these whiny ass biotches, period.

Since Trump won the Presidency the first time until now - lol, how many hearings against Trump have the American public been subjected to?
Of course, it had reach the point of satiation (for lack of better word) ............................... thus, EVEN IF indeed there was insurrection and even if Trump is at the root of it - no one cares anymore!
People are tuning it out.

Kinda like the kids who cried wolf.

Yeah, they're like a demented girlfriend who seemingly can't get over me looking at another woman, bringing it up over and over and over, thousands of times, years later, still going on and on and on over a simple glance, lol.......they are truly being seen as crazy people....it's very sad.

Actually, @redbeer, "The American People are Sick and Tired" of a former POTUS who sat on his ass and gloated with glee while his armed, violent, useful idiots tried to murder his very own Vice President, so he could remain in power, in direct violation to his Constitutional Oath to "Protect All Americans from enemies, both foreign and domestic."

Of course most polls are paid for by propaganda outfits to see how their narratives are playing to their target demos.

Well - some polls I'd seen were from the CNN. They did their own.
You can't get any more propagandist than that.

Yet - they all show the same result.

None. No American is forced or "subjected" to watch, or listen to, any of the hearings which are focused on Trump. Next stupid question.

Perhaps you are confusing two things. There is a difference between an Independent Commission and a Congressional Committee. The proposal I was referencing was a totally Independent Commission made up of members outside of the House. Retired Senators, judge people beyond political reproach. McCarthy and McConnell killed that because such a Commission requires Congressional approval....think the 911 Commission. They did that to force a Congressional Committee which would be much easier to discredit than an non-Congressional Independent Committee.

Well - whatever it is, it's not doing anything. It's not changing anything. That's the point.
In fact - it could backfire against the Dems. That's just my opinion.

17.7 million viewers is a flop?
LOL
The highest average viewers in 2022 is Sunday Night Football which averages 18.1 million viewers.

Lol - considering the population of the USA, that's more than a flop.
Don't forget too that the issue would've be of interest globally!
SNL has fewer viewers than that!
SNL ratings mean they're dying! 🤣

Ratings for the live sketch-comedy show on Saturday plummeted 35 percent from last season’s opener, bringing in just 3.5 million viewers, according to ratings agency Nielsen, which released early data drawn from 44 media markets.

As my colleague, Nick Arama noted on Wednesday evening, the hearings are getting pushed back due to “new tranches of evidence” which very likely means they have nothing at all.
The real reason for pushing it back is to put the hearings a bit closer to midterms when the narrative will be more effective for Democrats.

Right now, the sad truth (at least for Democrats) is that no one cares about the January 6 trials.

They don’t care so much, in fact, that even Democrats are openly admitting this a flop so massive that even Hollywood bombs look okay by comparison.

“I have talked with two separate Democratic members of Congress in the last couple of weeks about January 6th…Both of them have said, offhandedly,
‘Nobody gives a bleep about January 6th,’” Politico’s Betsy Woodruff Swan told Chuck Todd on MSNBC.

For the radicalized right today, there is no amount of facts or evidence, anywhere, that could ever possibly ever make any difference. They have the power of faith! Who needs any stinkin' facts or evidence?

I'm not talking about the right!

I'm talking about the American people - based on polls. Even Democrats! See post #164.

I guess there's a simple explanation for that -- Trump loyalists proudly refused to watch the hearings. Which is pretty unfathomable since the hearings were, after all, rather historical proceedings. Apparently if Trump says to hold your hands over your ears and go "Lalalalala....," then that's what those true believers do. As a result, they are oblivious of all that EVIDENCE of Trump's malfeasance that the Select Committee presented. Why would they record any difference?

The fact - based om the polls - the hearings did not change anything!

The Dems took a big gamble spending precious time on this when inflation is on people's mind!
They're getting decimated by the cost of living!

Lol - that would be like the Committee making such ado about a possible cockroach infestation................................... when people are scrambling, running for cover, or cowering, and trying to survive a rampaging Goliath!

Uhhhh.....yoooo-hooo- can we do the cockroach later? Deal with Goliath now? 🤣

It's so much like Biden, isn't it? ALWAYS A SLOW REACTION!
Remember the baby formula?

Same reaction here, too. SLOW.

What is it about the liberal mentality/attitude/psyche, that makes them tone-deaf and too slow to react?
Mind you - I wouldn't be surprised that they're all having their meetings over bongs over here - and everyone's too high. 😁

But not your side. Your side would never manipulate you for their own ends. Conservative politicians would NEVER take advantage of you.

Only your side tells the truth. Everybody else always lies about everything.

You know how stupid that sounds, right?

So basically you’re saying large numbers of people don’t care about a dangerous criminal and insurrection.

And you say that like it’s a good thing?

First thing to remember about congressional committees and subcommittees and select committees is that they exist within the framework of the Congress which means they are inherently political which is not the same thing as saying they are inherently political hit jobs. Some of them are in fact political hit jobs. Most are not. The Benghazi Committee was a political hit job by Kevin McCarthy's own admission.

The Select Committee offered months ago that if Trump wanted to come forward and offer testimony they would be glad to have him. HE DIDN'T avail himself of that opportunity and shows no sign that he would.

If the Committee had subpoenaed him even 6 months ago, it would be snarled up in the Courts to this day and beyond and what would that have accomplished. The simple truth of it is that the sand clock likely runs out on the Select Committee by year end. The only way to have beat the clock MAYBE on Court challenges to a Senate Subpoena to a former President would have been to have subpoenaed Trump right out of the box when the Committee opened its investigation and what kind of hew and cry about political hit job would we have heard if the Committee had done that?

We don't know the timeline for the evidence that they have gathered. They finally got millions of documents from the Secret Service just in the last month and claim that some of it contradicts the testimony they got from Engel and Ornato. How would they have prevented the Hutchinson testimony v Engel/Ornato testimony from turning into a she said v he said fiasco without some corroborating evidence one way or the other. Like it or not while I might think it absurd that anybody could credibly contend that Trump himself was not ears deep in J6 wildly insisting that he go to the Capitol himself under the circumstances that existed on J6 would have at least solved forever whether he had finally and completely lost control of his senses. I also think it absurd that Secret Service agents erased their phone logs. Who the hell do they think they are anyway.

I actually find it absurd that Trump and politicians generally don't assert that they must testify, that they must have the opportunity to speak, to share their truth. Why must it be forced upon them by virtue of subpoena in the first place and why would they not willingly go under oath to boot. Isn't the shoe on the wrong foot here?

I actually think issuing a subpoena to Trump at this late date was a mistake. I think the Committee should have continually offered to him that he was welcome to come in and testify under oath. I would hope they had sent him a formal letter on Committee Letterhead backing their oral offering made months ago that he was welcome to come in and testify under oath.

.........or when they do testify they plead the 5th. These are two points the right deliberately ignores when the whine about not hearing " the other side of the story" . How does one hear if someone doesn't speak!

That's irrelevant!

So basically you’re saying large numbers of people don’t care about a dangerous criminal and insurrection.

It's not foremost in people's mind - that's what the polls show.
It's inflation that they're concerned about.

And you say that like it’s a good thing?

Well - yeah!
From my standpoint - as a Republican supporter - that's a good thing!
I don't think much of that hearing. It's just a crutch to the Dems for the coming midterms.

My opinion? I don't think Trump will run in the next election.
I think, he'll hand the baton to deSantis.
I happen to like Desantis too.

This is why that group of Trump haters won't fold up their dog and pony show tent and move on. Their ticket sales are dropping like a rock, yet they STILL try to put on one more act.

What's that saying? The one about the definition of insanity?

The definition of insanity is believing that Trump won the election.
