Just an observation from the Sterling fallout in the NBA, or CEO's resigning because they supported a political cause that was unpopular with the masses or the usual media fauxrage (Huffington Post headlines cough cough) that every time some politician (usually from the GOP) makes some sort of statement about gays or minorities or anything that the mainstream thinks is unacceptable and must be spread out across the internet so that outrage can pile on outrage. Is it getting out of hand or should it continue?

Vote and be heard.
 

By your definition of political correctness, you are being very PC.
 
Political correctness is the normal rule of society. All that people are complaining about is which version to adopt.
 
I dunno. All I see political correctness as, is trying to keep people from being hurt, for one reason or another. If people would stop being jerks, there would be no reason for it anyway. But that will never happen, so I think that some level of PC is needed.

I'll probably be in the minority in believing that, though.

If you revisit Book 1 sometime, you would probably become acquainted with the basis of the concept. Although Tocqueville focuses on the speech of the majority creating a sort of tyranny of the majority (one of Tocqueville's perceived vices of democracy), the system of speech and thought control becomes quite evident.
 
The problem with political correctness is that it is essentially a system of lies and contrived untruths. With too much political correctness, such as we have today, the entire foundation of society becomes untrue.

Political correctness is so demanded in America today that if one makes the mistake of speaking the truth, he is immediately branded as a bigot, a hater, a racist or whatever other word the PC Police can use to silence anyone who speaks the truth.

We have gone far beyond "little white lies" to save someone's feelings, all of our institutions and systems are built upon the lies of political correctness.

This cannot be good for a culture or a country.

No, political correctness is merely an abstract tool for social control. It can be and is used for any political or social ideology.

Society has its rules for acceptable speech and thoughts. I would say it's a good tool for society. What is debatable, however, is what ideological designation is the goal for the employment of political correctness.
 
Political correctness is a by-product of hyper sensitivity to offense. The sick joke in this tragic comedy is that it is promulgated by those who'd tell others to mind their own business and ignore that which they find offensive.

Political Correctness is a cancer that has infested all aspects of American life, particularly the revisionist indoctrination halls of academia.

To attempt to downplay it's devastating effects upon the American culture is unbelievable. We've had sixty years of this "mere abstract tool" and one only needs to step outside the front door to survey the devastation caused to the former most beautiful country in the world.

We can't talk about that though, can we?

Yes. In any society you step in, there's acceptable boundaries of speech and thought before you become a pariah. So long as you are embracing the tropes of society, you are in good shape.

I know the word "revisionism" is used as a pejorative, but I'm afraid I have to inform you it's often what shapes your reality. For instance, your "correct" attitude toward history is the result of revisionism. Welcome.

Political correctness does not take away the right to free speech, it just invokes societal ramifications on what is said. In other words, a person is still free to be a douche, but people are also free to point it out.

Now, in today's usage, PC means when some one complains about something you like, they are being PC. Or to put it another way, what is the difference between complaining about some one making racial comments, and complaining about some one complaining about racial comments? People who bitch the loudest about PC are usually being PC, and just do not even know it.
 
Political Correctness has run amuck... it is a sensitive weenie attack platform for anybody that "feels" affronted.

I meant 'free speech' as speaking freely with a minimum of restraint.

PC means to restrict people - through various means - from saying what they really think. That means to restrict the truth.
If someone is not completely free (through contractual obligations or extreme social/media pressure) to say EXACTLY what they think on a subject, then the truth as they see it is being restricted.

IMO, PC has NOTHING to do with complaining about what others say. It is to do with pressures exerted to stop someone from saying anything deemed excessively negative or offensive in the first place...it is attempted censorship before the fact.

That is wrong and for the weak, IMO.

The term itself is associated with left-wing social and political consciousness, but the system of power it employs is roughly the same as other ideologies.
