Are citizens of the US unusual or even unique in mental health issues? I can't figure out why mentally unfit people in other parts of the world don't commit mass murder. What makes our mentally ill people different?

Our mental health care system needs significant access and affordability improvements.
That is a major understaement. There is still a huge stigma in merely seeking mental health care. Often they give you a pill and tell you to go away for 90 days.

Access to guns.

There is, for sure. I feel like it's getting a little bit better, but it's not where it needs to be, IMO.

Mental health for the most part is still a 9-5 job. Don't even think about going to the ER because they don't have a clue and often give you an attitude.

I have a list of incompetent psychiatrists and psychologists that I have had contact with. I've had psychiatrists blame for for not responding to meds in the way they wanted me too. One threatened to institutionalize me unless I submitted to 3 weeks of daily ECT, despite the long list of negative effects. I have retained a lawyer because of him and what he caused.

Another had me on high doses of two meds at the same time, despite the fact that they are not supposed to be given within 2 weeks of each other. I almost died.

Maybe we are causing it with all the BS thrown out there for political reasons. I think we are exaggerating the number of people with mental issues. When you keep telling people they are victims and that boys are girls and girls are boys, and people are out to get you or to hold you back. How about telling kids they need to change their sex, or tell them they are victims, it's not their fault and you are owed things you don't work for.

Liberals. No other country is so invested in victimhood.

yes, this country has always been more violent than Europe.

Behaving irrationally is not always mental illness.

Because unlike us they don't have a ton of guns. Even though the US makes up for only 5% of the world's population we have somewhere in the range of 35% to 50% of all the privately held firearms in the entire world.

Politics.

We can do better. We should shoot for at least 75%.

They do.

A sizable portion voted for Trump - question answered.
A large number of them stormed the Capitol - question answered
Another large number want to do away with a woman's rights - question answered
Daily we are entertained with election denialism, vaccine denialism, hatred of LGBTQ, and misogynistic knuckle-dragger comments from a certain number - so again - question answered.

Only in the sense that we normalize a kind of ongoing murder simply out of a need to protect a particular kind of murder weapon.

The US is the only country where crazy people have an uninfringeable right to own guns.

We in the United States of America have a higher percent of good guys with guns than other modern democracies.

A good guy with a gun is someone who hasn't killed anyone . . . yet.

[Ed.: Note that our legislators, no fools they, do not seem interested in having the legislature galleries filled with good guys with guns. Ever wonder why?]

Regards, stay safe 'n well.

That's not entirely true. People found to be mentally unsound by a court, or have been committed to a mental institution, are prohibited persons to buy from a licensed gun dealer. This is however a small percentage of all "crazy" people, and frankly it has to be that way. Government should not be delving into medical records for any reason, even though gun ownership would be about the most justifiable reason to do so.

MEDICAL MARIJUANA

Federal law prohibits medical marijuana users from possessing or buying firearms and ammunition — even if state law allows the drug’s use. An individual can’t have both licenses. Under federal law, any marijuana user is an unlawful user of a controlled substance. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals has upheld this rule. Marijuana in any form is illegal under federal law. Users of marijuana are prohibited persons. Checking ‘no’ on question 11(e) on the Form 4473 would be a lie if you use marijuana, which is a federal offense. See this ATF letter on the topic.

Now THAT is crazy. Marijuana law is manifestly a matter for the states, and the US should repeal all laws against it.
